In the last few days I've been able to finally get my heli started and running again...

I figure I should attach my wireless video gear now and start testing it out in the field...

I bought a 2.4 ghz 100 mW lawmate transmitter/receiver and panasonic camera last year from Yb2Normal.

I've got a 300 watt power pack that has both AC/DC and it'll power my little AC/DC 7" tv, a VCR and the receiver... I think I'm set for my first tests... just gotta figure out how to attach the gear to the heli...

I'll keep you all posted about my tests...

What do you think?

I'll have some pictures of my ground equipment soon, gotta do a field test...

Looks cool! Have you done a range test with the video xmitter running? Looking forward to seeing the results

RaptorHelius,

Try it with the antenna pointing downward. You'll get a little more gain out of the antenna when the heli is in the air. If you're only hovering close to the ground it probably won't make a difference. Make sure you do a thorough range check with the Tx powered up.

Are you guys talking about range testing the video tx or the heli tx? I'm only hovering right now so I dont think it'll matter which way the antenna is pointing, but I will definitely try it both up and down...

It was too crappy outside today to test any of it, hopefully tomorrow is nicer... My friend has access to a very large empty workshop and we're thinking of taking it in there to test it and hover it around...

I'll have some pictures of my ground equipment soon to post here too...

Range test the Heli control radio to make sure you're not getting any interference from the video system.

I'll make sure and range test it... How should I do that? Refresh my memory please...

Has it been a problem with interference from wireless gear? I've read alot about wireless aerial setups but never saw much about interference...

I'm stoked to get this thing in the air for some more hovering!!

I'm still working on a picture of my ground equipment, but here's a breakdown on the components...

1) field box (breaks down into 3 seperate boxes for transport and has wheels), carries my heli TX, 12v battery and starter with extension shaft, various tools, VCR, my video RX, cables, accessories...
2) 7" AC/DC tv
3) Xpower300 AC/DC power supply (300 watt AC).. This is a very cool portable power pack, it can even boost cars... It should power my TV, VCR and video Rx for at least a couple of hours...

my wireless video gear that's mounted on the heli runs for a little over an hour so far with my tests... (no tests actually done in field yet)

Looking forward to hearing everyones feedback...

Just turn on all electrical equipment which will be running when your flying, then with the antenna on the Tx collapsed, walk away from the helicopter. Have someone near the helicopter watch the controls as you give inputs to see if they twitch, or go into failsafe(PCM).

I've heard all sorts of 'exact figures' for how far you should go from the model. 100ft seems to be the most popular, other members might have different opinions on this though.

You could also do comparative testing, turn only the control Rx on, and control Tx on, see how far away you can get before the signal gets choppy. Then do the same with the video Tx on and see if it has any effect..

Like you, I haven't read much on video transmitter interference, however flaws in circuit board design or hidden damage to your video Tx, or your control Rx can lead to strange things. Cheaper to test in advance of any possible problems, even if there's a very low chance of one existing.

Thanks Sar...

As promised, here's a picture of my ground equipment and stuff. I finally got a chance to test it all and everything worked flawlessly except that I discovered that my canopy vibrates too much so I'll have to find a better place to mount the camera... I had very few dropouts and almost no interference the entire time until my video battery died out, it lasted just over an hour....

I burned 5 tanks of fuel today and was getting really confident in my hovering, I even flew the heli over and landed right where I needed to fuel up which is right behind my truck...

Of course here's a bigger picture...

I'll work on a video clip or some stills from the video to show soon...

I'm stoked now!! Just got to figure a better way to mount the camera...

Some stills from my first attempt at wireless video...

Dont mind the crappy quality of those stills, my USB video capture device is kinda, well, crappy!!

The quality is alot better on the video tape itself...

I ripped the camera out of the canopy in preparation to re-mount it somewhere... Not quite sure yet where or how... Back to the drawing board!

That's interesting... But I'm thinking I might go with a enclosure that I can move from model to model or whatever other purpose I can conceive... maybe a small cylinder of some type that holds everything and just needs to be strapped to the heli...

Perhaps something like that but maybe even add a small servo and stuff and make it able to point forward and pan it down??

I've been doing some tinkering to my Raptor over the last few days and have worked out most of the vibration issues that have been affecting the heli, so I decided to try my wireless video gear inside my canopy again... I have mounted the gear basically the same as before (except the transmitter is moved up higher and the antenna is pointing down).

I haven't tested it yet since I re-installed it, but I'm confident now that it wont be as bad vibrations as before...

Here's a new picture of the work in progress (now sporting some decals) and hopefully tomorrow sometime I'll be able to test it...

here's a bigger picture...

I'm having too much fun!!
