Gasser Model RC Helicopters > Help me pick my next bird!

Well.. I totalled my Raptor .30 today.. Bad.. Lost radio contact and it stuffed itself in a inverted piro. Man.. What a NOISE! My 1st real crash and it sounded like a gunshot. Dang..

In any case, I am taking this "oppritunity" to upgrade my flying apparatus. 60 size is a given, and gasser is desired. Low flying costs, and I'm not a crazy 3D'er anyway. Someday, but not soon.

So my thoughts are, Xcell, Rap60, Freya, Benzin.
So the questions are, what can I shoehorn a G23/26 in and how difficult is it? AND what would be a good bird for mild aerobatics and general flying. Repair costs are a factor as I am still learning autos and seem to bite my tail a bit more than I would like. However I can afford the infrequent crash.

Thanks folks!

Vario makes some really nice gassers. Is your raptor too bad to fix? Since it is your first crash it might look worse than you think to fix it.

Its not necessarily a good idea to jump from a Raptor 30 to a $2000.00 gasser. Like others have said, you'll pay through the nose whenever you crash it. Why not a standard 60?.

My opinion

Yes, a gasser WOULD be a nice way to go. Yes, the initial expense is more FOR A NEW MACHINE.......but used ones are almost the same price as a comparable glow. Repair bills.....well, that depends on which machine. An xcell gasser is the same cost to repair as a 60 glow xcell......sharing many common parts. The engine will alst much longer than a TYPICAL glow motor placed under the same loads......and much cheaper to operate. If your not in a BIG hurry, hang on a couple-three months and look at the release coming from Century. I own an xcell, and also a Vario.....both excellent ships. There are some attributes about the Vario that make it more desirable than the xcell.....namely utility in scale applications. Josef over at air star international is making good efforts to close some of the customer service/part shortages that some folks (not myself, for MY experience with him has been excellent) have noted in the past. I would refrain from adapting a glow machine over (raptor 60/90 to a gasser) as there are a few things not worked into stone as of yet. Tom Fidman did a predator 60 into a gasser, and with good results......but it took above average skills and machines to do it. Go Gasser......you will be glad you did in the long run. James

I agree that the crash costs on a gas machine are about the same as with the 60 machines. Typically they use the same parts as the glow machines. Then you have the benefit of not dragging all the extra equipment to the field. No more relying on your starter battery or glow starter for your flying. Just pull the cord and go fly your heart out on 25 cents of fuel.

Have you considered the Bergen Intrepid Gas? While it may look like it costs more than the Vario, the Intrepid has the motor included in the kit price where the Vario does not. You end up spending about the same. The Intrepid is a much lighter machine designed with the sport/3D flyer in mind. Yes, I said 3D flyer. The Intrepid Gas will 3D all day long. The new engines produce more power than ever and, in the right machine, will outperform most of the 60s on the market. The Bergen is also a U.S. manufactuered machine with great parts availability and great customer service.

Life's a journey, NOT a destination.

I recently did a trade for an X-Cell gasser. The cost of repairs will be about triple that of your Raptor 30, but the savings in fuel cost will more than make up for the the increase in repair costs.

I used to burn 2 gallons of 30% Cool Power fuel a week with my 60 powered X-Cell. That's $50 dollars every week just for 1 model!! I had to limit my flying because fuel just plain cost too much.

In the Gasser I am using Coleman Camp fuel at $3.50 per gallon and 2 ounces of synthetic 2 stroke oil. Total cost of a gallon of fuel is about $5.00. Not only is the fuel cheaper but fuel consumption is about half. I am now flying at least 1 hour every other weekday morning and about 4 hours on Sundays and burning only 1 gallon a week. That gives me $45 extra each week to pay for other stuff and I am flying much more than before.

A typical boom strike crash with an X-Cell Gasser will cost about $200 with decent carbon fiber blades. If I crash once a month, the repair cost is just about covered with fuel savings alone. I usually crash once every few months so I have a lot more crazy cash to play with.

Now that I have my Gasser dialed in, it almost equals the performance of my glow powered X-Cell on 30%. My gasser loops, rolls and flips just as well as my 60, just slightly slower. The 60 has a little more reserve at the bottom of autos, but the gasser still autos much better than any 30/50 size helicopter. With 2 pounds of extra weight, and superb X-Cell mechanics, the gasser is the most stable helicopter I have ever flown. Super easy to fly. In the past year an a half, I have built at least 18 helicopters and test flew and dialed in many others.

Very nice, used X-Cell Gassers sell for about $750-$850. Not much more than a Raptor 60 V2.
