I'm breaking in my new rossi 11.5 and i need a little help. it idles very nice, transitions great and has a pretty strong midrange. My problem is with the top end. when the throttle gets over 75 to 90%, it has a very rich spot. anything over 90 kills the motor. i have never had this problem before. is it normal? will it go away? its had about a gallon of fuel so far. my low needle is 2 turns out and my high is 3.5 Any ideas what to do?
i hovered my kobold today a little and am finding it to be a handful. i set it up using the info on variocanada.com. i only have 4.5 degrees of cyclic and am having a hard time keeping it in one spot. do you have to use expo on ccpm helis?
Also, about how long should it take until the rossi is fully broke-in? what should the needles be set at? Thanks

Could be enya number 4.. I ran 5% cool power and Nova Rossi C7G Cold plug. I have a shim on my cylinder head.. Do you have any shim on your cylinder head?

lean up your high speed needle a few clicks.. or try the 5% cool power. I'd never tried FAI fuel yet.. and try a cooler plug like #7 if you can find it.

It takes 6 to7 gallons to fully break in a Rossi 11.5
The low speed needle on the Rossi sets the hover mixture and the high speed for top end.I had the same rich spot but it was from 1/4 to half throttle. This was normal. But as far as the high rich spot ya go with what Hel_gal said lean it out.

My Rossi 65 has 4 (thin) head shims, a Rossi plug that came with it and runs on home brewed fuel, 15% synthetic oil (Aerosave) and no nitro. No problems at the top end after 20 flights. I do have a slight problem with transition from off the pipe to on, but expect that to diminish as the engine gets more time and I can get the mixture closer. These engines seem to thrive on revs, so don't overload it with pitch at the top end.

It sure likes to run reverse when idle needles too rich as well.

That's one trick my Rossi hasn't tried yet! Used to have an OS32 in a Concept that preferred running backwards to forwards!

No means of checking the temp, other than a finger on the backplate immediately I put it down, hot but not sizzling. I agree with you about the head speed; I started out with the idea that it was the basis of a scale heli and should have a nice low head speed, it flew terribly! Now I have it wound up to 16 or 1700, it is a pussy cat.

I found the same issue on my Rossi 65 then I tried something that another Rossi owner said... I opend up the lowspeed needle to 3 3/4 - 4 turns out and it cooled the engine down and allowed a gret power band... Give it a shot and see if it helps!

thanks for the replies. 1600-1700 for hover?? the manual i have says 1500 is good for 3d! they want the hover around 1350 to 1400. but i'll try changing the needles a bit and see if it helps. thanks again

I have been flying my Kobold w/Rossi 11.5 for about two years now. I have been using CP 15% from the start with no problems. I did have a Super Tigre carb on it that worked excellent. I recently re-installed the stock carb to see if there was any difference. I haven't noticed any. I also recently added an extra head shim, also didn't notice any difference. I had "rcbirt" dial it in about a month ago, he says that I problably don't need to have the extra shim. My heli seems to have a tremendous amount power. I run a six blade cooling fan and OS #8 plug. The only problem I have is the first start of the day. I have to loosen the glow plug until the cylinder gets lubricated, after that it starts every time. These are great helis, but take some getting used to, due to the left hand rotation. I'm not sure what my needle settings are, but I do know my idle is rather rich. My hover speed is about 1650 to 1700 rpm. It sounds like it is screaming, but it does handle nice and stable.

well, i took it out today and the rich spot is gone. leaned the idle screw 1/2 turn and the high needle 1/4. thanks for the advice. its making a lot more power now too. i had a little problem too. i was hovering about 2 feet up when all of a sudden the motor started screaming and the blades slowed down. the main gear was spinning on the shaft. i had a look and the shaft has a flat spot at the very bottom. there is no flat spot where the gear sits and it cannot move down. so, i went home and checked the manual and the one in the picture has the flat in the right spot (about 1/4" from the bottom). the one i got must be for a different machine. would i be able to grind a new flat in the shaft for the setscrews or would that weaken it? i have to do something because that would suck if it happened when i was flying.
