When I first started with my Futura a couple of months ago, I was advised to use as much tension as possible on the main drive belt.

I ended up adding both brass shims to the engine mount and it seemed to turn OK, but when landed after a 10 or so minute flight the belt would creek round.

I've just re-built it somewhat and decided to re-align the engine to give more play. It's now got the aluminium shims on it and the belt now feels very loose indeed.

I've heard/read somewhere that you should be able to twist the belt through 90 degrees and I'm just wondering what 'you lot' have experienced.

Cheers
Richard.

The belt should twist through 90 degrees, as you described. Any tighter is too tight, and will stress the engine bearings.

To my experience, the belt should be twisted 90 degrees with ease.
This is optimal tension.

If the belt tension is little tighter or looser than this, you may see the fluttering of belt (check this out while hovering),
The fluttering is gone if you set the tension more tight but you
can destroy the bearing.(my experince, the upper bearing of pulley was destroyed, gone rust and rusted particle of bearing
damaged the main gear)

watch out the fluttering of belt and align the clutch and pulley carefully so the belt cannot touch the frame.
once the belt chafing the main frame, steel wool in the belt comes out and the whole drive system and frame shold be replaced. (in a few seconds) guess how can i know this.

Have a nice fly!

twist and shim

the 1/4 or 90 degree twist is the perfect setting. I've seen a mm deflection value based on pushing one side in. this measuerment results in the 1/4 twist tension.

You get that setting when you use the aluminum shims only, pretty much automatically. I might be wrong, but I believe the brass shims are for LH rotation models, or models that use a different # teeth on the clutch pulley.

I will be watching for the aforementioned flutter, that's a new tip for me, one that makes perfect sense.

Sprung and tight is definately a bad thing.
