Scale Model RC Helicopters > My Century 30 H. 500E broken dream,, help

For flying at my house I wanted a scaler because there's not enough room for speeding around,,, so I want a smaller 30 size scaler, it will be my first scaler!! I was looking at the Hawk4 SE and a Century H. 500E or MD 530,,, but all I have read on the forums, is, don't buy a Century fuselage for your first glass fuselages,,, is there another brand that sells a H. 500 30 size fuselages that is easier for a frist time scaler ?? I was also looking at the Hirobo Lama and the Century Bell 47g, but the Bell is a bigger bird, and I wanted a smaller one... And, is the 530 that Century sells the same one that Miniature Aircraft and Ravesdesign sells ?, and are these MD 530 a 30 size or a 46 size? Ravesdesign told me there price is $199.95, I thought that was a good price !

I had a Hughes500F model 30 size from Min air (X-cell). It was a nice flying lil 500, I actually modified it to accept Hawk mechs, it was my first heli scaler. The only hard part is installing the LG they are a stinker as ea. leg is separate and hard to get centered just right. They have a pic of the finished heli on the X-cell home page. This and Heliworld(Century), are about your two choices in 30 size.

Hughes 500

Congratulations on trying for a scale machine, if you look in my gallery photo you will see a century 30 size Schweitzer 300 with a Hawk 3 in it. It has been very good to me and I would recommend this machine to anyone. A friend of mine in the helicopter club has just finished painting a century Hughes 500 E, we are going to install a hawk se in it. It does not appear to need any wood formers, the mechanic's will be sitting on top of the landing gear supports, at this point it appears that we will be able to do this without any modifications to the fuselage. As we progress with this if you would like me to send you an e-mail with photos of a progress please let me know. Charles

Century glass fuselages are not for the beginner. No instructions and only fair glass work means they need some building experience to get right. The good news for you is that the 30 size fuses are not made by century but by Funkey. And those are of decent quality. If you want to spend less than a couple months building a fuse I'd recommend the prepainted version. The price looks high but after you add up all the paint, thinner, tape, sanding and hours spend fixing screwups, the prepainted ones are a bargain. Century has several combos that include the Hawk mechs setup for a specific prepainted fuse.

Century scale kits

I purchased a H500E Century fueslage for my 60 and I bought the unpainted kit. It was $349.00 and the painted kit ARF was $850.00.

I thought that was quite a price jump but after building this kit I can see why they charge so much for the pre-finished body.

The fiberglass has way too many pinholes, I couldn't see them until I put the primer on it. A lot of work, and as mentioned earlier, no instructions.

There must be a better kit out there. Although I think the kit will build quite well, a lot of work must be done to make it look right.

If you want a cheap sport scale H500 you could get a Hirobo 30 size fueslage, last time I looked they were around $150.00. They are plastic not fiberglass. But it is a cheap kit. The Century 30 kit for the 500 is probably of lesser quality than the 60 kit and if that is the case, it will be a tough build.

I hear the Vario makes nice kits as well as some others. Bottom line I think you get what you pay for. If you can, get a body that is already GelCoated. This will eleminate much of the prep work.

Hughes 500E

The latest Century 60 size H-500 kits are now made for them by Funkey so they are the same high Quality as the great Funkey units they sell.

Scale H-5600E fuselages

I have had two of the FunKey (FK) thirty size H-500E fiberglass fuselages. One was prepainted and the other was not painted. Both were of "BVM" quality....the best I have ever worked with.

A friend built one of the older Century 500 60 size (the ones made in the USA) and it required a lot of prep work.

To hear that the current versions of the 60 size ones are now made for them by FK will mean they will be of the same top quality as the 30 size units I built.

hmmm....maybe it is time for me to do the 60 version.

Century 60 H500E

I purchased my Century H500E on Jan 14th, 2002. It was ordered from the factory to Aerohobbies.

If Century has made a change since Jan 14, that I guess I purchased a few weeks too early. I doubt my kit was the older non Funkey kits.

As I stated before, my kit left a lot to be desired. Lots of pinholes (I really couldn't see them until a primer coat was added), no instructions, wrong landing gear skids (5-6 inches too short), windshield molded BACKWARDS, yes, backwards (it will work but could be a lot better if it was just molded correctly)... no gelcoat, no rivet or panel line detail worth mentioning. There are a few panel lines to be fair but not what one would expect for the money.

I think they do a great job on the prebuilt/painted bodies (overpriced a bit at $850.00 IMO) but the raw kit leaves a lot to be desired.

My kit did have all the glass cut from the fuselage, the tail feathers are fiberglass and the wood formers are pre-cut. I understand the older kits did not include pre-cut wood, nor was the glass cut outs done and the tail feathers and formers were made from plywood which had to be cut out from templates and shaped.

The kit will build into a very nice heli with a lot of work, lots of spot putty and sanding and some extra modifications will make it more scale, you can see mine in primer now in my gallery. I hope to have some paint on it tomorrow with any luck.

I bought a Hughes 500E fuz. kit from Quick UK. It is fibreglass, comes with wood kit to mount mechanics. It is for Morley Maverick mechanics but I fitted Robbe Moskito mechanics instead. I would think most 50 size mechanics would fit, there is plenty of room.
The quality is first class, red or white moulded firbreglass, gel-coat is shiny, well finished, panel-lines, proper tail-feathers moulded from glass as well. The finish is good enough not to need paint if you don`t want. Skids are scale looking. The whole thing is pretty accurate to 1/6th scale, judging by my measurements. Best thing is, the price !! They sell for about £120 in the UK. Worth a look.

What 30 scaler?

If you are looking to buy something that includes the mechanics and comes painted then you should also take a look at the Century Shweizer 300, their ARF Long Ranger, ARF Bell 222 with retracts and the the ARF Airwolf.
