I've posted a similar post in the Robbe section but thought that here would be a good place for this subject.

I was wondering, out of curuosity, if anyone made a flybar arm for the Futura, as I had not discovered one myself other than the costly Robbe part that they have on the new Cuatro.

I went ahead and made one myself. Here are a couple of photos of it.

Assembled.

Exploded.

I am unsure as to what finish to give the aluminium parts, the surface is worse than I expected. I would sand/file them down but am concerned that this might cause an inbalance etc. Thinking of painting them black to follow the silver/black theme by Robbe.

Any comments are welcome.

Thanks all.

Gerallt.

Hi Gerallt,
looks fantastic. Did you use the same dimension as robbe?
(distance between ball links, etc.)
Let me know if you want to sell it. (How much?)
Due to the alu surface, I can say that Jan Henseleit (Mr. 3D-NT)
used to have a beton mixer for that. I don't know exactly which material
he used. I think it was sand or a kind of granulate.

Hi Frank, thanks for the comments.

Used same dimensions as stock Robbe (40mm between ball centres, as far as I could make out).
Not sure about selling, it was rather labour intensive with the equipment I had to hand (very slow and not giving a great finish). I might make some enquiries with a couple of local climing equipment manufacturers (big on CNC) about what would be involved in producing a small batch.

What is the 'beton mixer' mentioned? Is this a component on one of Henseleit's helis or is it a surface finish?

If its a finish, you talk of a granulated finish, do you mean a kind of gentle sand blasting?

Hi Gerallt,
sorry for my choice of words.
Beton mixer (I don't know the english word for that) is a machine wich is used on a building site. You can mix "beton" a stonelike material containing sand water and cement. This one is used by Jan. He fills in some little balls and his untreated peaces and let it roll. After a while he gets out his peaces with a dull finish on the surface. Little work with maximum effect.

Cheers

Hi all,

Beton in english is actually concrete (or cement).
He is actually explaining the so-called "stone washing" principle used on jeans and such(very small stones that is , sand )

I have heard of this process but never knew its name. Don't the parts need to be in the 'machine' for a long time, like a week or something? I believe it helps a lot in reducing stress points on the surface of the product, which is why it's used for climbing equipment-thats where I've heard of it.

If you can find a machine shop that has a sandblasting cabinet they could use a fine grain sand to put a nice matte finish on the aluminum which would also give you a nice surface to take paint if you decided to paint them. Other shops might have a sandblasting cabinet but they might use it more for stripping paint or rust therefore they would be using a larger grain sand and have the air pressure turned up abit high which would basically make a mess of your parts but a machine shop would have more experience in working with aluminum.

Just an idea.

Thanks for the supportive feedback. I've modified and made up another one since but have a couple of parts remaining to be done.
It's taken a long time as it's not as easy for me to get to the machines and have some peace and quiet working on them. In fact, I've had to put the heli to one side for about 6 months (no interest lost though, don't worry) to do a few things in the house, concentrate on some busy time at work etc.
I'm going to be off after next week and I really hope to actually finish it.
When all is finished I'll also take some photos and post them up in my gallery.

All the best,

Gerallt.
