Gasser Model RC Helicopters > Gasser ? from a possible gasser newbie!!

How does a gasser heli compare to a 60 size ship as far as performance? Will it do loops, rolls, and flips, and fly straight FFF like a 60. I know what the advantages of gasser are such as the low fuel costs, no cleanup, but what are the disadvantages? Thanks, Daz...

I need more than Envy, I need performance, but I would be the 1st at our field with a gasser, and it might be worth looking into as long as I have good performance. I dont want to be laughed at, because its a flying hog, made for just hovering, and some FF, with no manueverability. Daz...

Gasser heli

Hi, I have a Bergen gasser with the G26 in it with the Bergen pipe. This thing will 3D with the best of them. I am very pleased with mine and how it performs. It will take about anything you throw at it. Hope this helps. Chuck

Al, I didnt know you were into gassers, your all the help I'll need with getting one up and going. All I need to know now is do they do all the manuevers the 60 size ships do. I was thinking of getting the Predator gasser when available!!! I like the predator but would like to try something new, hence, gasser!!!

So how do you like it so far Fidman, I was going to PM you on this, but I figured you may chime in on this topic. Which engine did you go with on yours?

Dazz,

I am starting work on a Raptor Gasser. Waiting for a pinion from Tom right now. Then I'm gonna get a G231 and possibly a new R60 kit instead of trying to convert my current R80. Progress will probably be slow as the summer is a busy time for me. Lots of trips this month and next.

psawya, that sounds interesting, keep us up to date on how well it turns out. I want something made to be a gasser instead of making my own out of a nitro powered vehicle. If I had more experience with gassers I may have considered doing as your doing, if I get one I just want to read a manual and do as it says to do. But be sure to keep us updated!!! Thanks, Daz...

I have both the Bergen Gasser and Intrepid 3D with a WC. My 3D is lighter on the sticks but looses headspeed much faster than my Gasser. I do more maneuvers with my Gasser than with the 60 at 1/10th the cost per flight.

Thanks for your input Malorie, very good to hear the gasser has capabilities of manuevers. I'm still at the consideration stage of these gassers, I do like the fuel cost savings, thats the biggest plus. Daz...

It depends on the fuel

My X-Cell 60 ST on 30% nitro fuel would make my X-Cell gasser feel adsolutely lazy. The 60 will pull a couple more degrees of pitch without bogging and would easily outclimb the gasser by a wide margin. The loops are much bigger and cyclic response is much faster.

If 5% nitro fuel was used in the 60, they start to fly with almost equal authority. The 60 still has a slight advantage, but the gasser will handle a little more pitch.

If you are looking for the ultimate in hard and fast 3D performance, you must go with a 60 or larger size glow motor and 30% nitro. The power to weight advantage is just too great for any gasser to overcome. The lower weight also benefits disk loading which is very important to a 3D machine. Anyone who tells you a gasser can match the performance of a comparable 60 size machine is either a salesman or doesn't have a firm grip on reality.

I am not trying to put gassers down in any way. In fact, I sold my 60 ST to buy the gasser. When I feel like blasting around the sky, I fly my Fury Extreme. For relaxed everyday type flying, it's the gasser. The most you can ask from a gasser is smooth 3D and conventional aerobatics.

Roy,

You may not have seen the latest gassers do 3D with the new engines.

If you can make it to IRCHA this year, I'll let you fly my Gasser with G26, then let you decide.
Granted, I'm not on a par with a lot of the guys (gals) doing rough and tumble 3D, but to watch Mal put hers through the paces may make you a believer.

Yes, I am a salesman, but I also know that with a properly setup machine, any manuever is possible.

Enjoy,

Chris Bergen

I guess I'll stay out of the eminent battle between the gasser and glow folks. All I will say is that I no longer bother with glow. And it has little to do with money (as Chris can attest) although it is an added benefit.

Chris,

You are right. I have not seen the very latest in Gassers. My experience is limited to X-Cells and Benzine Trainers. Please excuse my narrow minded post. I apoligize if I offended you or Malorie. I need to stop posting so late at night.

Thank you for the very generous offer to let me fly your Gasser. I'm sure it would fly circles around mine. Being a 3D wanabe I am not qualified to evaluate the performance envelope. My piloting skills are limited loops, rolls, flips, autos and very sketchy inverted hover(I can manage about 5 seconds before bailing out). I won't be able to make it the IRCHA event, but I would greatly appreciate the oppurtunity to try your gasser if we meet some time in the future.

I've had my Bergen Gasser with stock G23 PUH and 680 blades, for a couple of years or so and it was nice and smooth and had enough power for me. I'm not into 3d other than rolls and loops. Thanks to suggestions here and elsewhere, I replaced the stock carb with the Walbro 603 and left the needle settings as they came. It now pulls 710 blades and the engine accelerates as it climbs. I was told this is because it climbs so fast, the air rapidly becomes rarified and there is less resistance to the blades.

Easy way to try a Bergen Gas

If you'd really like to try one of the new Bergen Gas Helis just come to the IRCHA Jamboree and you could possibly be the proud winner of a Bergen produced and Malorie built product!!

Couldn't resist putting my 2 cents into the conversation.
