Is anybody using the DS 811 servos? I was looking at them from Cyberheli and they look like a good deal on a Digital servo. I was going to put them on a Sceadu 50. My other option is just sticking with the old standby Futaba 9202. Any opinions???

Thanks,
Shawn

Servos

I can't comment on Futaba as I don't have any. I do have 6 new 8411's and I'm not going to use them until I get the gear set from the "JR 8411SA".
They have made a change in the gear set from metal to nylon, hopefully this will relieve some of the failure problems with the metal gear sets; not the gears themselves but the pinions comming loose. Note that the output gear remains metal. Your milage may vary.

The 811 are quite ok for a 50, have seen a 60 use them on cyclic and collective.

Replacing the metal gears with the new nylon ones won't fix the gear problem you are mentioning. The pinion gear is not the problem, the shaft is comming loose inside the core of the motor. The only thing the nylon gears really do is remove the slop you normally feel with the metal gears.

BladeRunner, it was not the pinion coming loose. The armature stacks actually broke loose from the main shaft. This was due to sever binding of the servos. The servos have so much torque they self-destructed doing their job. The servos that failed were in a specific brand and model of a heli. The pilots that had this problem had multiple servos fail the way I understand it. Len Sabato from JR Heli stated it's possible that any pilot could have a servo failure these days; this is true of any brand of servo. If he has two fail he either has very bad luck or he is doing something wrong. If three fail he is doing something wrong.

The 8411 and 811 are different servos, the 811 can only be found on the pacific region market. If I am not wrong the 811 have nylon gears. The spec of the 811 if I remember correctly should by 4kg and 0.21 sec . In the pacific region here, the jr 3810(same as 8103) comes with 4 ds811.

DS8411's

Thanks for the info and replies, the 8411's that failed were in a guys heli here and he had 3 fail within 3 mo. All had the pinion break loose, the motor problems if I recall correctly were on the 8417's. There was a recall notice on Horizon's site.

The 8411 metal gears from what I have read ware quickly in a heli environment, someone said they could feel slop develope after only 5-6 flights! My skill levels are low at this point, I doubt that I will be in a position to "ring out" my servos for a long time, I just wanted to get a jump on a known problem. Of coarse when I spoke to Horizon service they said I will void the warranty if I change the gears--oh well.

Something is causing the metal gears to lock up, as you mentioned with the amount of torque available something has to give. I guess the pinion is the weak link in this case.

JR DS 811

Can anyone tell me if there is an american equivelent to the 811. JR's site does not list them (specs, application, etc) Also anyone have good experience with them. I just bought 4 of them (NEW from eBay- $45.00 each) and want to make sure it's going to be OK to put them in my Raptor 60. I currently have S9202's in it with a JR 3000 Gyro & 8700G for the tail. If the 811 is a bad application I can alway use them for one my planes... My only concern is the failure issue i just discovered.
Anyones input would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!

I don't think that there is an American Equiv.

osxpro,

I e-mailed Stephen at Cyberheli and he said that they don't sell the 811 in the states. That is only a Pacific market servo. IMO- I think that the 9202 is as about as low as I would go with the 60. My buddy used 9202's all around on his X-Cell 60 and does some pretty heavy duty 3-d and has no problems. The 9202 had approx. 6kg torque as opposed to the 4kg on the 811. There are some others on this site that are more qualified to give an opinion but I think that 4kg may be a little on the light side for a 60.

I'm using the DS 811's

I aquired 4 of these servos from eBay the other week and have had good results so far. BUT!!!! I'm using them in fixed wing/ and heli throttle only. the lower torgue rating is useless in my Raptor 60. It's excellent though for precise throttle response. For fixed wing they're ideal for ailerons. for $40 each I couldn't go wrong!
