Can the RR floks give me some advice on piro auto's and inverted auto's. When I learned auto's I did it with the real heli "waited for a real windy day", I could not and still can't auto the sim at all. I am just playing with the sim and it seems to take alot of head speed to flip it right side up. Do most guys come down inverted to about telephone pole height and flip it over? With the piro auto's. Can they be done with left or right rudder."I know one will reduce head speed lees than the other" and at what point do you stop the piro's and come straight in for a touchdown.
Thanks guys

I've just started doing inverted autos. I'd make sure the blades you're using spin up nice and quick after you slow them down. Inevitably you'll screw up the first few 'rollouts' and slow the head right down. The ability to spin the blades back up is going to be the only thing that saves the heli...

Piro autos can be done all the way to the ground but you have to fly it all the way. I don't think it matters which way you piro, it will all use headspeed. I piro to the left. My thinking is that I am going with the rotation of the blades which would be the natural tendancy if you were coming straight down with no driven tail.

The first inverted autos I've done were started inverted and rolled out almost immediately. As you get used to how to work the headspeed, you can roll out (or flip out) later and later. I'm still getting out 50+ feet up.

Life's a journey, NOT a destination.

Make sure to lock your blades down real tight so the don't lead/lag and boom strike if your headspeed gets too low.

I'm also ready to try the inverted auto. On the subject of how tight the blades should be, I've heard that they should be real tight, and that they will still center themselves on spoolup. Is this correct? For normal auto's I have them set so they stay put with a good "shake" with the heli tipped sideways, is this enough, or tighten more?

Thanks,
Jojo

JoJo: That's about the standard I use, and I haven't had a problem with blades folding back.

Chuck: I TRY to continue pirouetting until the skids touch down, but realistically I usually chicken out and stop the piro a little bit sooner, especially if I still have airspeed (which is almost every time, I'm terrible at pinpoint autos). I'm a whole lot more comfortable touching down with a slide when the skids are pointed in the direction of the slide...

Work on pirouetting for the whole descent. Then work on pirouetting through the flare. Then work on pirouetting from the flare to the touchdown. That approach worked for me anyhow. You should already be able to do slow hovering piro figure-8s all day long, if you're going to try to keep pirouetting after the flare starts. Low head speed and low altitude with the engine idling is not the best time to learn pirouetting control.
