Is there any FAI guy here?

What is the best RPM for hovering maneuvers? Is the lower the better and why? Can I run higher RPM but use lower D/R to give same response?

Good question. Dont know if I qualify as FAI guy but I have done F3C competitions...
Low headspeed is usually used for hovering to make the heli fly smoother and sound better. The noise level limit of FAI may be part of the deal.
Also the heli will not accelerate that quick when correcting late or wrong. But as you say, this is similar to what you can do with a dual-rate or exponential.
I have the impression that the machine also becomes a bit more sensitive to wind with lower head speed. This is probably due to larger stabilizing effect of blades and flybar at high speeds. Also the gyro will work quicker. So I think high head speed has more pros than cons.. Finally numerous machines get wobbles if RPM gets too low. Definitely not good idea for FAI. So I'm running quite high head speed, even in hover, and I like that.

I also believe that the heli will be more stable at higher RPM because of better gyroscoptic effect.
