I couldn't fly on Sunday so I went this AM and had the entire field to my self (until a planker shows up). He has a ARF Cub. He comes up me and asked what freq. I was on (so far so good) the grass was fresh mowed so Ididn't think he would have much of a problem. He accelerated for about 10 feet and ground looped. He had a buddy with him and he decided to had launch it. his buddy threw it straight up it hung on the prop for about 5 sec and then nosed it. As he was carrying it back to re start I commented that there was a track "Way over there" and commented that he did not have very many rubber bands holding the wing down. His comment was the the rubber bands were for looks and the brass screws held the wing on He then took off behind the flight line on a tennis court and staggered across the flight line at about 10 feed . He then climbed up to about 400 feet and an did some sloppy maneuvers ending in a pull out where the wing parted company and majestically fluttered down the rest came down like a missile and disintegrated at the other end of the field. when he brought it back there wasn't any pieces bigger than your hand Justice I think

Now you know why some guys will never be able to fly a heli! If you can't fly an ARF Cub, then you've really got to be in the wrong hobby!

I would not be the least bit suprised if that fellow had never flown one before, probably and most likely did not have AMA coverage nor Wings.

I lost my infamous tag line.

Cub easy to fly....

A cub is not a trainer and IT IS NOT EASY TO FLY (but very easy to land....)

A real trainer has alot of dihedral (not sure about the speling).

My hangar 9 Ultrastick is much more easy to fly than my cubs (I even have one that weight only 6 pounds with a SAITO 91S, I have unlimited verticals !)

;o)

I agree with Alexandre. I fly both. Planes and helis. Piper Cubs are not trainers.

Jeez.... Come on guys. It depends on the Cub in question. The Sig scale Cubs fly better than most any ARF trainer.

"Is a Cub easy to fly". What loaded question. There are way to many variables to make such a blanket statement. My answer would be. "In general, yes. If the kit is at least close to scale, put together correctly, built light and straight, a Cub is easy to fly".

Extremeflying,
I think I know what .25-.28 size Cub ARF kit that guy was talking about. Unfortunately, it is not a good example of the Cub. It is heavy for its size (bad wing loading), has bad decalage (wing, fuse, tail incidence relationship) and is known to have warpped wings. So in this case, this Cub is a bad flyer.

I had the Carl Goldberg Cub, Anniversary edition, full wing. Had a Enya 60 4cycle. I had that plane almost ten years. Although it's not a trainer, it's very hard to stall and flys very smooth. The only difference between it and a trainer are lack of diehedral, it will not self right itself. If you can't fly a cub then you have no biz flying anything but a desk.

The Carl Goldberg Cub, Anniversary edition cub is a great flyer. Unfortunately mine met its demise on a bridge when flying off floats. I thought I had it cleared. Anyway. The worst thing about a cub is the take offs and landings. Being a tail dragger they are not a good first plane anyway. The tail gets light and off the tailwheel at an early stage. If you are too eager with power, then you will ground loop. Landing is a lot the same way except opposite. You have to fly it until the tailwheel touches the ground. Flying the cub is great. Nice slow sunday flier with aerobatic capabilities. I miss my cub.
