I took my friend to a part and flew because he has never seen a heli fly before. I was doing pretty good flying some circuits, really only my second time flying in a field. He was coaxing me into doing some rolls and flips. He wanted to see something cool. Well I wouldn't and he lost interest a little and he was getting a little board waiting me to finish my tank. I looked back for a split second and I lost orientation (I have been flying without my canopy because its drying) and at about 30 feet nearing some trees I couldn't tell if I was nose in or tail in. Giving stick in one direction and noticing an opposite response left me very little time to pull out of a bank into the ground. I came about 3 feet from the ground and banked across in front one me keeping it away from the trees. Then I put it back in a hover in front of me and said "Oh my @#$ that was close." My friend said what are you doing, but he liked it, it was cool enough for him. Definitely scarey. All the sim practice prepared me for pulling out a manuever with success. I am so stupid though.

Hehehe

Don't feel too bad! I was working on a little nose-in Monday for the first time down low and I got dumb thumbs long enough to have to duck and turn around in time to climb out and away from the pits.
I had her in doing nice circuits again before I started to breath.

GOTA Love this hobby!

Ha I told him he can't come with me anymore (jk). He gets me so comfortable and trying to do crazy stuff to impress him so hes not bored. Its kind of annoying when people watch. I really have to rethink this park situation. Well anyways, I think I'll tone it down a bit and practice more. I think by trying all loops rolls and crazy situations I knew I never would try on purpose on my real heli was a good idea because I got out alive today. But I was almost mad because I knew how easily I can crash, and I so don't want to crash.

Your not the first person to do something stupid like that, ever try itching your nose or your ear while flying? its easier to itch yourself while keeping both hands on the Tx and bringing both hands and TX up to your face, but sometimes that dont work either, at that height of the hands, its hard to move fingers whats worse is when someone else runs up behind you and slugs you in the back SORRY, MOSQUITO WAS ON YOUR BACK! or trying to fly with one hand so you can scratch! one of my buddies got a new raptor after seeing me fly, he gave up on helis a few years before i even got into it, he was still in the hovering stage and got his chopper a little too high for him so i had to take over, well he wouldnt get his hands off the Tx fast enough... the thing spun around "nose in" flying at us", I managed to hit the aileron to get it out of our face, by the time i got both hands on the Tx it was about 4 feet off the ground, falling on its left side, I dont know how i saved it! that was another pair of underwear i had to throw away

there is also an important lesson here to be learned... use a buddy cord!

Ill tell you fellas a story that happened to me 2 yrs ago. I was flying @ a park just tooling around in FF when a Yellow jacket bee landed on my thigh and for no reason began to sting me and sting me. It stung me several times before I got my heli on the ground but I was determined not to crash. Talk about pain!!!!! Im glad im not allergic like my wife is to insect posions or I would have been in serious trouble fast. Anyway I did get the pleasure of finally killing that bee. I dont know what attracted it, maybe sweat? It was very hot and humid that day, anybody else ever have this happen to them? I HATE bugs....................

Something else

Have you ever walking while in fly. Imagine this : You are comfortable with what ever your level of flying so you walking fort and back or even in a circle just like the air plane guys and you standing on a grass field then you trip over some hole throw you nearly to the ground.......
Or when you loose orientation in 3D and the heli above or behind you , you have to make a quick move............

Always, always...I repeat, ALWAYS......resist the temptation to show off for anyone. Never let them goad you into doing something you are not comfortable with or unsure of. Remember, it's not their machine out there and if it crashes all they'll say "Dude, that was cool! Can you do that again?" And you'll be the one picking up the pieces, paying for the parts and spending time repairing it.

As for taking your eyes off the machine try to avoid it or at least get it several mistakes high before you do. I've found with helis you can't let your eye wander for the least bit. With planes it's not too bad but things can go so wrong, so fast and helis seem to magnify this. Perhaps you could practice with the sim but only for emergency purposes and situations (like the bee sting above) Sometimes we get to comfortable flying and do things we shouldn't (like walking around ). As Lou Gosset Jr said in 'An Officer and A Gentleman'; "Use your PERIPHERAL vision!"
