Bergen R/C Helicopters > Bergen Gasser Beginner Setup Questions

I just bought a wrecked Bergen gasser that was owned by an experienced flyer, and I'm new at this game.

1. Could anyone tell me the adjustments that I have to make to the controls on this machine to make it easier for a beginner to fly or is it all in the radio setup?
2. Also I understand there is a main shaft thrust bearing upgrade, since both main shaft bearings are toast should I get this upgrade or is the upgrade different parts altogether.
3. What lubricants are recommended and where? (Since the machine is apart)?
4. The tail boom shows on the web site as being 31 1/4" long but I read that a 33" (??) is better to accept the 720mm blades, can one specify a longer boom? & shouldn't the tail blades have to be smaller with a longer boom (torque arm moment?)?? or is it not affected?
5. Any other specifics I should know about this machine ? (but I'm too new (dumb) to ask!!)

Thanks to all!!

Bergen Help!

First I would go to www.BergenRC.com .....Pretty sure Malorie put a link to download the manual. Then go through all your parts and see what needs to be replaced ...... Then call Larry at 269-445-2060 .... He will answere all your questions and give Solid advice.

Dr Tim;
I've got the manual but these questions are not in it, I've looked. Also I have listed all the parts I need now I'm just waiting for cash to come in before I order. (up to $300.00 without blades!!) I don't want to tie Larry up on the phone for these questions as they may take awhile & he's pretty busy, I know, I know he'll do it but I feel that I'm imposing. I thought that perhaps I could get some of these answered here.

1. Adjustment wise I would leave them all at factory settings as in the manual. I have moved my to other locations like in the bell-hiller mixes, but as a beginner they are fine as in the manual.
I would then turn on exponential and bump up the elevator and aileron to about 40-50% to smooth everything out. I would also bump up your rudder expo to about 20% as well for a bit of desensatizing around neutral. These are very smooth machines and I can let go of the sticks for about 10 seconds on a nice calm day.

2. I would not worry about the thrust bearings. Just get the standard ones. Not really an issue as a beginner or even intermediate pilot.

3. Lubricate what it says in the manual while building. Once built, I have oil I use a few drops on certain parts and I use teflon spray on all other little parts like ball links, etc. Remember the bearings are packed with grease, don't blow the lub out of them with a spray. I lub it before every day of flying as they don't get soaked up like nitro helicopters.

4. I have the short one, I run 700 and 105 on the tail and they are close... The nice thing about bergens is the torque tube is a 3.00 dollar arrow shaft and the boom is only 10 bucks or so... So upgrade or not, it really doesn't matter. It's cheap either way. I can't remember the exact arrow size, but I took the bearing in and found the exact arrow size for it. Now I have about 6 torque tubes just waiting to be used!!!

5. The last thing I have learned from experience is that you need a fairly strong servo on the tail. Mine was butter smooth and still needed a strong servo. I sacrifice servo speed for torque any day. I can deal with a twitch in flight, but a lockout will cost me dollars.

Also, the recommended upgrades are the tail transmission upgrade and possibly the elevator upgrade, but it's not as necessary as the tail upgrade. If you like to autorotate, I suggest the constant gear. I don't have one and my gasser has a stopped tail rotor at 40-50 feet off the ground. It looks bizarre to have my tail blades just sitting there and not spinning. By the way, this is because there is hardly any friction in my tail system.

Thanks Josh!
C Bergen uses a FUTABA 9252 servo on the tail it has 92 /.14 Torq/Spd spec so lots of torque. The tail boom you mention, "for $10 bucks or so" as I have to buy one anyway I might as well get a longer one as I think I'll buy 710mm blades. Does the standard boom come longer & you have to cut it to length or do you specify the length when you buy it? The machine already has the elevator & tail drive upgrade. Have you heard about the double "O" rings in the head? What are they for? ...dampening?

When you call to order parts, specify which length tail boom you want. They do dome precut to length. Stock is 31 1/4", Extended boom is 33" long.

The double O'ring mod is for those that are doing hard 3D and wearing out there dampeners quicker than should be. It also allows you to run tighter dampening without getting the "nods" Again, tighter dampening is usually for the hard 3D guys.

We can modify your existing head for $20.00, or purchase a new one and request the double o'ring setup.

enjoy,

Thanks for replying Chris, as per my question 4 above "shouldn't the tail blades have to be smaller with a longer boom (torque arm moment?)?? or is it not affected?" perhaps you could answer this for me? Or in other words with a 33" boom could I use 680mm thru to 720mm main blades? & What size tail blades would correspond to these blade sizes? My guess is the gyro would compensate for whatever but I'd like to know what the optimum setup is! After all this is a Bergen!!

I would get a longer boom, the 33 inch if I ran anything over 700. I would also just use a standard 105 tail blade with either boom. You can never have to much tail and an inch and a half extra boom will probably not be that noticable either way. Just use the regular ones.

I would use the 9252 on the tail as well. The torque is great on this servo. My dad uses it and it works just fine. I have an 8231 right now that is like 90 ounces of torque and .22 speed, SLOW, but it actually works fine with the exception of a slight wiggle. The speed in these super fast servos only comes into play when you start doing hard backwards flying manuvers, which at that point, you can probably get your servos for free from your personal sponsor if you know what I mean. Even then the 9252 would probably hold in all but the hardest of hard maneuvers.

Good luck with the heli.

this guy does a lot of graphics work and can print off graphics on a 6000 dollar printer that cuts out the letters for you.

www.conachenaircraft.com

give him a call or send him a file of all the differnt things and he''ll send you a sheet of nice graphics, all cut out lettering and everything.

The 95mm tail blades tend to be a bit short for hard 3D and stall out with heavy tourque changes produced by the larger displacement motors. There are a few factors to consider when going to longer tailblades: ground clearence, blades clearence, and oversensativity. In short the best tailblades for 3D stuff for the Gasser with a 33" tailboom that are readily availible are the 105/107mm range. I'd almost like to try something a touch longer like 115mm. The only way to do that though is to cut down something longer. Also I think the ground clearence would become a problem.
