Main Discussion > Raptor clutch bell / bearing question

So after hearing all the feedback on the Raptor 30 clutch gap being too big, I decided to take apart the engine / clutch bell to inspect the gap size. I understand that the bearing (p/n HMV1680) is press-fit onto the top of the pinion drive gear. Unfortunatley, I was not awawre of this until now as I purchased the ARF version. Anyway, the only way to remove the clutch bell was to separate the body / mainframe of the heli, which is a one hour process, and remove the entire bearing from the mainframe.

To make a long story short, I was unaware of the press fit and decided to sand a couple of thousanths of an inch off the top of the pinion gear so that the bearing wasn't stuck to the pinion so tight, allowing the clutchbell to slide off the bearing / shaft next time easier, without separating the main body. My question is, should I have not sanded the top of the pinion? How important is it that the bearing be press fit onto the pinion?

Thanks for your help!

I'm not sure about the sanding of the gear but being that I have the kit I do know that you should be able to just unscrew the bell off of the gear. I did not use any locktite or CA on the threads because I figure the rotation direction of engine should keep the bell tight. Good luck.

Someone told me that the pinion was loctited on the clutchbell, therefore I went the hard route. When I took it apart, I found there was no loctite whatsoever and screwed right off - the easy way for next time.

Does anyone know if I should now replace the pinion after sanding a couple of thousanths for a firm fit (no more press fit) or is it ok as is. Thanks.

pinion

I always sand my pinions as I have found most always , that they fit too tight.

I will sand (chuck the pinion in a drill) until I can push the bearing on by using moderate finger pressure only.

I then put a smear of blue locktite on the shaft then push the bearing on.

You can make a bearing notchy by having too tight a fit.

I guess it doesn't hurt the pinon as long as its not to loose and the sanding was done evenly on both sides. I'd put a lot of loctite on that sucker though if its not a press fit to keep it locked into the inner race. I don't know why people make such a big deal about getting the clutch bell assembly out. I can get it out in 10 minutes or less.
