Crashed? Discussion and Photos > Pancaked X-Spec

I planted my X-spec today, real, real hard. I lost orientation during a planned autorotation and the ship ended up flipping on the way down. I could probably have finished the auto, if I knew that it was flipping, but due to the gray sky and hazy conditions, I didn't find out until too late. I probably shouldn't have been flying so high with the sky the way it was

Both carbon frames were pulverized. The landing gear is almost completely flat. It looks a lot like a sled that a squirrel might use. Luckily replacement carbon frames for the X-spec are pretty cheap at MJP Carbon .

So far, the list of what I need to replace is: fan shroud, flybar, rod ends, two rods, head button, main blades, muffler mount, landing gear rails, all lower frame spacers, spindle, maybe mainshaft, lower frames, upper frames, tail boom, tail blades, tail output shaft, tail support tubes, vertical tail fin, landing gear, radio tray.

I have to replace the upper frames because one of the canopy standoffs broke off, taking a big chunk of frame with it.

You can see all of the pictures here.

Here are a few for the post:

Stuck my Raptor 50 V2 in today too. This was the first flight after a crash rebuild. Dumb thumbs again. Oh well. The parts are just a phone call away.

Not bad...

Hey at least you saved the blades!

I bet you can straighten that gear without much effort or strength lost. The rest (except the frames) looks pretty much like a normal crash kit.

The blades are not saved... they don't look too bad but the trailing edge on one of the blades isn't sealed anymore, I mean I can pull it apart with my hands. There are also a few cracks But no big deal, its only money!

Harbinger,

Wow. Yeah. I'm not planning on using the blades again. Guess I'm not too surprised that you and the other guy didn't notice, but "main blades" *does* appear in the list of things I intend to replace. I also did say that there is visible damage. Actually I said I could put my hand inside them...

Oh no Dan!

Sorry to hear about your gravitational anomaly. Oh well, just another opportunity to use that engine replacement knowledge you've gained! I've been flying almost every day with my new xspec and really enjoying it! Leaned out the needles and am fine-tuning the pitch response. Boy this governor thing is a kick! Starting to get back into my piroflip attempts with the new machine. I know what you mean about flying against that overcast sky. I've almost lost it a couple of times too, but I've been more conservative than normal in my flying because of all the time and money I've invested in this thing. But that's starting to change the last couple of days as the engine settles in and I'm becoming more accustomed to the machine's flight characteristics. I had a bad run of accidents during my autos at the beginning of this year. So I stopped practicing them until I could get a backup ship together, although I did some unplanned ones when the engine flamed out. My plan now is to use my Freya for practicing autos and fly 3d on the xspec until I feel comfortable with autos again. Marty helped me get my confidence back doing them on the buddy cord at the Hirobo Cup. Did you see Szabo's video? I started working on that 4 point tic-toc thingy (back, left, forward, right). And my inverted circuits need more work. I keep giving the wrong aileron inputs in the turns and falling out of them. Back to the sim! Took a cue from you on the fuel tank. Mine came out of their rubber holders today, so I got some velcro strips to hold it in. Well, let me know how the rebuild goes. Get back in the saddle man!

I spent a good couple of hours going over the remains of my X-spec today, and the mechanics are totaled. Completely. There are four bad bearings in the head, 2 for the main shaft, 1 for the clutch. Both frames are destroyed. A couple of the frame spacers for the upper frames are destroyed. I haven't even checked the tail rotor yet.

Because most of the X-spec specific parts are either unbroken or I allready have replacements, I am going to buy a stock Freya kit and use it for parts to fix this thing. Doing this is actually cheaper than buying all the replacement parts. If I didn't allready have some carbon frames, I'd be getting an X-Spec kit instead.

A friend of mine has an unopened Freya kit that they're going to take some stuff out of (canopy, decals, main gear, fan hub, engine mounts, clutch bell, one way bearing) that I don't need, to make the cost smaller. I think we settled on $420. I've also got a friend helping me out with some blades.

Oh, and check this out:

Yeah, that's right - you're looking at my third bearing block. It bent. Can you believe it? What's even more unbelievable is I can't seem to find any trace of the main shaft being bent. That's some nice hardened steel there.

So right now, the crash cost is $420 + $30 for rails + $27 for third bearing block + $90 for blades. That's $567. Ouch.

Must have been a "pretty hard one" Dan, when bending the bearing block..

The damages are unbelievable!
It takes lots of force to bent that bearing block.

Thanks for the sentiments I have just pretty much finished rebuilding my X-Spec. I had to rebuild everything.. it was basically like building a brand new helicopter. The only thing left to do before the test flight is replace my base loaded antenna. There's nothing wrong with it, but it may have gotten tugged on in a crash, so its getting replaced. Otherwise, everything is ready.

I did a few things differently this time, too. Every time I crash something, I like to somehow improve the ship while I'm repairing it, so as to make the time seem less wasted. This time I covered most of my tail boom in neon orange tape, with two strips of blue. Should help with visibility quite a bit I think. I also mounted both my 601 and GV-1 boxes on top of my receiver StrongBox, instead of just the GV-1 being there previously. The reason is that this area is on top of foam (the battery) and not directly attached to the frame, to lessen shocks. I've also managed to get rid of the cyclic binding I had with maximum positive pitch. Hopefully the test flight will go well

In the end, it cost me about $700 to fix, and this includes savings from parts I had allready, friends who helped me out, etc. Worst crash I've ever been involved in.

And I'm in no way suggesting that the X-spec is a particularly expensive ship to crash - like any 90 ship, it aint easy to crash, but this particular crash was really, really bad. I am greatful though, because I have pretty much a brand new helicopter
