I have a new dial indicator (1/1000 inch) and use a magnetic base to attach it to a drill vice. Ray's book talks about 5000th of an inch as a good number of runout on hubs and clutches to proceed - can anyone add supporting experiences of using these tools to get a helicopter to run as sweet as possible.
For example - if a clutch runs *in* 3thousandths on one side and *out* 4 thousandths on the other arm is this a total runout of 7000s or is the effective difference 1000th?
I got it down to a total of 2000 both sides by installing a new clutch and rotating the mounting. The raptor stock hub runs out only 2.25 thousandths as it is installed on my engine. The machine has a sweet sound now.
could you possibly tell me where in sydney you bought it and also how much was it??

Dial indicator 45$, magnetic base and stand 45$, Vice 39$ - all available at a place called The Machine House (or something - don't have the receipt on hand) in Parramatta - at the end of Church St - near the Dick Smith Powerhouse. I got the dial indicator and base at Bunnings and the drill vice at the machine shop.

starduster, yes, your example would be .007" runout. The .002 is nice, and should be smooth.

You can get a good new dial indicator with mag base for around $25.00 on ebay. That's were I got mine and it works great, I had the machine shop at work check the calibration and they said it was fine.
