hello all,
i was unpacking my gyro and servos and read the label that says :

"Warning: This product contains a chemical known to cause cancer and birth defects (or other reproductive harm)"

I know that the nickel in the batteries isn't the best thing in the world for you, but what does the servo have in it that would be so bad?

Just curious...

Hehehe-it's a lable to "cover their butt" Many products have such lables, as long as you don't eat too many of them you will be fine (products or lables).

Probably the brass. Dick Bennett(B&B Specialties) had to put this label on his smoke valves for sell in Califorina.

What do you expect? We're living in a country where they put "Be careful contents are hot" on the coffe cup at McDonald's.

It's a California thing, gyros and servos have it on there all the time.

gotcha...
i kind of thought that it was a protective disclaimer. i am use to the ones like the fan belt, "caution: contents hot" on the coffee cup, even the "serving suggestion: defrost" on the swanson frozen dinner boxes, but having a warning like that on my hobby goods were a little strange.

Most of the times they are referring to Berilium Oxide which is used to mount silicon based circuitry in can-type enclosures such as the Gyro's SMM sensor. That material is being phased out for silicon nitride. There are additional chemicals that are used in the manufacturing that can potentially produce harmful effects. We in California have a pretty bad history of damage induced by unknown chemicals into manufacturing workers that ended up in lawsuits. That's the reason why the laws requiring the labels were passed.

that is a very interesting post. I also wondered why Calif. was mentioned on some other warning labels. that took care of that!

so even if the parts are manufactured overseas, once in Calif. they are tagged with this kind of warning label?

Take a look at your lawnmower sometime. It has labels like do not use to trim shrubs. Do not put your fingers under the metal tray thing.

Welcome to the world of better living through chemistry. The compound known as fluoride was first used in the late 50's and early 60's as a pesticide. It was found that small qty's in tooth paste would kill the bactera that damages teeth. hence spit it out and rinse.

As far a gyro's I bet that there is some solder in there somewhere which contains LEAD.

A news story in south Alabama this morning a child broke a thermometer a found the substance inside to be pretty neat. he brought it to school to show the stuff off. The teacher call the office, the classroom was evacuated, hazmat teams where called in to inspect the classroom, the bus and everywhere the boy had been that day. The boy was suspended for ten days. Yes were talking about that silver stuff we all use to play with when we where kids, (Mercury) Why do we still have glass thermometers? if this stuff is so bad.

P.S. The boy was 8 years old.

Label?

I had a set of instructions from Tiwan or Japan, translations can be hilarious.

One part of the instruction said to " fix part "A" to "B" using the supplied "f**k".
LMAO! Of coarse they meant "screw" but someone had made the translation and was obviously confused. I kept the instructions to show people for a long time but they finnally disappeared.
