e-Electric General Discussion > So many upgrades... for what??

I was thinking, with all the talk about replacement swash plates, gears and motors... does anyone have the time, or the knowledge to post or create a list of the possible and suggested upgrades, their intended effect and the actual results? what's wrong with the stock swash plate? why does the stock motor only last 6 flights for some people? Are they meshing their gears too tight? This would likely cause an overdraw of current to the motor, and burn it out.

Basically what I'm lookin for is a summary of the mods that people do and don't like, and why... I can see doing mods on a nitro bird, but my intentions with the hummingnird is just to play in the office at lunch time, or harass the cats after dinner... Is my hummer really going to be that disapointing?

Live and learn

If I knew what I know now when i first purchased my hummingbird I would have just bought a bare frame with landing strouts and tail boom, and I would have built it up with all the aftermarket parts. The Hummingbird out of the box is useless,
These are the mods I have done and you need to do to get a nice flying indoor heli...
aluminum swashplate, shaft collar, cf blades, and blades stiffner.
new main motor, weather is brushless or not there are a few ones to chose from, All separate electronics 2 and 5 amp ESC's
with HeadingHold gyro and replace the 600mah 8.4V Nimh battery pack with 1200mha Lithium Polymer.
the Hummingbird electronics is not that great,
The stock plastic swashplate causes friction agaist the plastic tubing used to hold the shaft and kills the motor prematurely and eats the batteries real fast.
these are just my findings...
I think the Picolo although a little more expesive may be a much better product for indoor flying...

lol, after all those mods, are you sure the stock Piccolo is still more expensive?

dont knock the hummingbird,it is a great

indoor heli for us beginners without lots and lots of money.if u fly the heli 24/7 hell yes u will burn the motor out,but for someone like me,flying it 2 or 3 times weekly is just fine....so dont knock the hb,i lov emine and if in the future if i want to get a new motor, alum skids, etc. then cool otherwise get yourself a raven 30,50.......choco

I installed the shaft collar as my first mod. Flew fine but I needed more power. Installed a 280BB motor and was very happy except for broken blades. I then went with Hornet fixed pitch carbon blades and was extreemly happy.

I would say that a motor upgrade is the only really necessary mod.

1) The 280BB gave much more power and increased flight times. Also lasts longer than cheapie motors.

2) Shaft collar - well Ididn;t really see much difference, but I am sure it must help some.

3) Horned blades - you need to increase the head speed to use these so a faster motor is in order. You get a more stable heli and perhaps a bit quicker response. Forward flight is improved too. Very durable.

I am now using a brushless Razor RZ350 and love that. I also use E-Tech lipoly cells which give very long flights (in excess of 20 minutes continuous hover).

FYI,

Century has already set out to resolve the motor burnout issue. For the most part it seems that the main reason for burnout is gear meshing too tight. The motor is a tad bit on the underpowered side and needs to be heatsinked to last any length of time, especially if you plan on running the li-poly 1200s on it. They are just about to release a new 370 motor which will significant resolve the overheating/burnout problems many have been experiencing. I will be getting one as soon as they are available (hopefully within a week or two) and I also heard that they are planning on rekitting the stock h-bird with this motor, not sure if this is true or not, but we can all hope.

As far as the swash plate mods. They are totally unneccesary, unless you just have this overwhelming desire for aluminum. The heli can operate just fine with factory swash if you setup your ATVs properly as to aleviate binding. I do on the otherhand like the collar mod. It will help remove any up and down play in the main shaft and remove the extra friction that can develop by the plastic sleeve rubbing on the upper bearing outer race. If you install this 5.00 mod ($8 if you want aluminum) and then slim the plastic sleeve to act as a shaft spacer to correct for the ID of the swash and OD of the mainshaft difference, you will not only reduce friction, but increase overall swash tilt.

The hbird esc is adequate, and so is the gyro and servos. You can hop it up but once again, it is not nesc. to enjoy an inexpensive indoor flyer. My $.02

I disagree Flyflie, I have two Hbirds one I have spent a fortune on and is Collective pitch and brushless+Li Po, the other is virtually stock. When they were both stock I got plenty of runtime out of them I have never burnt a motor out. And they were still plenty of fun out the box, as long as you have some common sense check there is no gear mesh, everything is balenced etc you should still have plenty of fun.
