Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > R60 vibration

I've gone through about 4 head blocks on the R60 now. When I put on a new one it will be smooth for a while then start vibrating again. The last one only lasted two flights before the vibration started in again. My question is this-does Rick's Helis metal head block solve this problem? I presume the problem is occurring because the head block is bending in flight since the problem is solved temporarily by replacing it. This has occurred with several different sets of well balanced blades. If anyone has any experience here it would be much appreciated. Thanks. Steve.

Raptor 60 head

I think you should try the O-Ring Flap Damper Upgrade Rick's RC sells for $20.00 and I bet it solves your problems if they actually are head related.

Ron even says he really couldn't tell much of a difference in the metal head with O-Rings and a stock head with O-Rings.

Also, make sure your headspeed is at least 1550 or 1600 RPM to prevent a wobble that sometimes shows itself in a hover and in turns at lower headspeeds.

Vibration

What I'm experiencing isn't a wobble, it's vibration in the t/b at rotor head frequency and increases with increasing head speed. It's hard to see how the O-ring mod will solve the problem if the head block is bent. I don't have a way to accurately measure the head block for sure, but since the problem has repeatedly recurred after putting the heli through hard 3D, and is resolved temporarily by putting on a new head block, I don't see how the problem could be anything else. Thanks. Steve.

A couple things (in order of progression):
1) check your static tracking
If it's within a couple mm's proceed to 2, if not, get a V2 head

2) make sure the feathering shaft and ID of the dampers are well lubed
Check the center section of the old feathering shafts looking for galling from the aluminum pivot. This is a tell tale that your feathering shaft was not lubed well enough.

3) statically balance the head with everything on it but the blades on a hi-point or equivillent. I pull the mainshaft and balance it with the swashplate and all.

I truely doubt the headblock is bending. More likely, you have been getting V1 headblocks from your supplier.

Jeff;
Thanks for the reply, but if the problem is balance or tracking, why would the vibration go away when I put on a new head block? I don't mean to be hardheaded about this, but none of the replies I've received so far make sense to me. The heli will be perfectly smooth right after replacing the head block, then after doing some full cyclic flips or hovering rolls it will begin vibrating again until I replace the head block. This has happened now with three different sets of blades that are well balanced, so I doubt that rebalancing will resolve the problem, but I guess it never hurts to try. Thanks. Steve.

R60 Vibration

Something else to try (I remember this from an earlier post)..... is the addition of another (a second) Tail Drive Shaft Bearing in the tail boom. A few people said there vibe problems were solved with this. I ordered an additional one from Heliproz (its about $ 8) for a Rap 60 that I am building now. Also, make sure the new Head Blocks have the silver mark/insert in the bolt hole (to indicate that it is the V2 Head Block). ACE has not recalled the old/bad/V1 ones.... they are still in the shops. Vibrations

Bob;
I'd seen that post about putting in a second t/r drive shaft bearing also, and have tried that w/o any success. I couldn't see that putting in the second bearing really did much of anything. Thanks. Steve.

I've been fighting the exact same problem with my Rap 60 since it was new. I've replaced all V.1 parts with V.2 and the vibration persists. I've tried EVERYTHING!!! The vibration comes and goes just like described above. I'm even running Rick's dampener system -- it didn't help a bit. I have learned that this machine is extremely sensitive to blade balance. It has to be dead on. A set of V-Blades works best for me. I think it's just the nature of the beast. I really like the machine overall, but a few things could certainly be improved upon. Another problem is when you jab elevator from a hover, the heli takes a few seconds to stop bobbing. I guess I've just been spoiled by my X-Cell....

It is very important to check the tail output shaft for straightness before installation. Clay schmidt on the raptor list sells some aluminum bearing holders for in the boom, to replace the plastic one(s). The people who have used them have reported that they really smooth out the tail. I believe some of the TT plastic ones don't center the tail drive shaft exactly which causes an imbalance and the tail to shake. take the tail gearbox off and turn the maingear and see if the shaft is moving off center, if it is this will cause an imbalance. Put the tail gearbox back on and then pull the boom out at the mainframes and turn the tail rotor by hand and check and see if the tail drive shaft moves off center.
The bearing holders are $20.00 each and are O ring supported.

The headblocks may just be cheap plastic and your 3d moves could stretch out the center hole. If you're game you can try the Metal head available from Ricks or Helihut for U$120. A few more plastic parts and the metal head will pay for itself.
