I wished it were true!

If you think you have something going for insurance, you better think again. I'm not saying that insurance is impossible, but you better have an attorney look it over very carefully. I have seen policy's that look like "a dream come true" only to find in article: 4-873 equipment may not be in use above ground level?? Meaning, if someone tripped over your equipment will it was laying on the ground, you would be covered........or if you backed over your equipment, that to would be covered.......! As long as you don't leave the ground!!!

Insurance

I have found an insurance company who are interested in covering RC helis if I can provide a Lossrun document for 3 years of business. (What that means is that they want documentation from an existing helicam business that has been in business for 3 years, and see that no claims where filed, in order to calculate the risk involved in insuring us.)

Has any of you guys been in business for that long with insurance?

Anyway, if someone has, and maby lost insurance, this would be a good way to get back in business again. unfortunately I could not get a quote from them until they have the Loss/Run documentation, but it is a major company.

Or, maybe some of the equipment manufacturers in this business has the insurance already and would like to help their customers get started.

I have been in this business a little over a year now. I have come so close so many times with getting insurance, and then the companies get cold feet. I got a call just today, and a good agent friend of mine in Atlanta has tried for 4 weeks straight. He finally called today and faxed me a list of over 20 companies that will not even consider writing a policy. I am not giving up yet, but it is very discouraging I have to admit.

I feel really confident that if we get about 20-25 guys in our shoes that are 100% committed to getting a policy with money in hand, that will get thier attention. What do ya'll think?

Keep trying!

lowandslow,

I just got off of your web-site. Great job! Looks like you have an awesome business going. I don't know about California, but here in N GA. the opportunities are endless. At this present time, I am having to turn down work. Better to do that, than over promise and under deliver. I do admit I am only doing this part time, but I would love to be able to do it full time. Insurance is the only thing holding me back right now. I am willing to bet that is somewhat the case with you as well.

We need your help, don't give up.

It's not a matter of money or getting 20 players involved. They simply don't want the risk.

AirShot,

Thanks for the complements. We don't use the RPV for aerials at all anymore, we use strictly full size (R22 mostly). It's too big a risk to fly without insurance so we stopped. Plus, our event photography has pretty much taken us away from much of our aerial work.

You are the offical #3....congrats. We will have insurance. As we get closer to reaching our goal, I will need to get names, phone numbers and addresses.

By the way, great home page on the site! I had actually already been there before you asked! Good job.

I have had plenty of conversations with agencies that admit their biggest fear is flying in crowds. I am sure that for that application such as events you are shooting, we may never get insurance. What a liability. But we might get a policy for commercial, and residential. You seem to have alot of professional experience under your belt. I could really use your help. I want to get insurance for myself, and all these other guys that NEED it as well. They are going to help, can we count you in one more try?

I think you may have misunderstood. We never used the R/C platform for event photography. We only did commercial and residential jobs. Our event photography is strictly hand held. We're using Nikon D100's and shoot mostly motorsports, equestrian, etc. Eventing can be seasonal so we are also doing small product photography to fill in the gaps. I'd love to participate but the event and product stuff is keeping us pretty busy. Hope to go full time in a year or so. I also sold all of our aerial stuff. I still fly for fun but not for profit anymore. Maybe someday I'll give it another go should the insurance situation change. I must admit that John's new electric camera ship caught my interest. We were using his carrier and really liked it.

Promises - Promises

I have filled out so many documents for insurance brokers and underwriters that I know all the data from memory now. The results are the same sorry no can do!
There is no company that I have found or heard of that will take the risk they just feel that the premium that they can charge does not justify the potential risk. Doesn't matter if you have 1 or 25 people besides that there is a big difference in insurance when crossing state lines. I have been told if I would like to lay out $10,000.00 for a minimum premium then I have 2 sources that will write a policy. Will it cover me in a loss, maybe? I havent seen any documentation. Can I afford that, no way thats $200 per week at a fixed cost. I hope that someone can prove me wrong but I wont hold my breath. I have already sold 2 of my platforms to a guy in the UK where insurance seems to be a no brainer.
