Aerial Photography and Video > Cheap rig turned out okay

Hi Guys

Well I had the rig finished yesterday but it p*ssed down all day, today the winds are pretty high, 15-20 mph gusts, but you know I just had to try it out, you all know what its like.

Anways the camera was my Fuji 6900 z, I just left it on auto. I wasn't too bothered about composition of the shot so please excuse this part, more the vibration effects on the image itself to see if it could be improved.

Now bearing in mind it was a struggle holding it in a stable hover what do you think of the images. They have been edited slightly by increasing the brightness of the image (dull day over here) but for my first proper attempt using a home made rig (cheap as well) I dont think they turned out too bad. I'd be interested in hearing your comments, as I said, ignore composition, that will come later, just wanted to fire some shots through it.

Can't compete with you guys in composition with such beautiful countryside around you (Jeff, Flyboy, MPA etc) but there's some pretty tasty countryside around here which I'm going to explore.

BTW, out field is pretty plain so I stopped off nearby to at least get some kind of structure in the shot.
Look forward to what you all have to say.

Lee

Hi WMac

The heli is a Sceadu 50, here's a picture. Gasser looming in the distance if these pics turn out okay.

Nice job.
Cheap rig, even better.
(so long as you get shots you want)

On the scenery you might do better, appart from the beach here in Aus all I see from any height is tree tops everywhere unless I head out of town to the wider open spaces.
Middle of town, trees all around, over 100ft up just tree landscape no matter where I go in the suburbs.
Too many tree huggers here in the city I rekon.

Just saw the pic, does it float on water ?

Cheers

Hi MPA

Nope, the floats are just to guide the heli in as it lowers onto the mount on landing (Rig is suspended 20mm below the skids to avoid vibes).

Also softens it and provides a bit better orientation.

Sorry realised what I wrote (seeing the camera below)

Im just keeping my eye out on "floaty" ideas and those side bits got me thinking about it.

Snappy looking rig, nice and bright.

Cheers

Hi there Lee,

Yep, there's some remarkable definition in those pictures, Nice Job - actually I think you can get even more definition out of the same pictures like this......

I've noticed with similar picures of our "green and plesant land" that there is a whole world of improvement that can be had from losing the white haze in Photoshop or similar by droping the brightness 10-25% and upping the contrast 10-30% to compensate. It's also possible to reduce the white haze at source by dropping the digital exposure by .3 to . 7 EV and I guess a UV filter and/or circular polariser would help too (if it's possible to fit filters to your camera).

Cheers!

Julian

P.S. the non-stop wind and rain, every day for 2 weeks in this part of the world is enough to drive you mad isn't it?

Hi Julian

I was waiting for you and hoping you'd see the post.

I didnt have too much time to play round with the image and after this evenings events have found its not too easy to 'frame' the shot but with practise it will come.

I am just about to add an image I shot between storms this evening to the 'Its a beautiful day' post, take a look. Actually the picture shows it a lot brighter than it was so I'm pleased with the camera setup at the moment.

Polarisers are a thing I'd like to try out, especially for those brighter days, wherever they are !!!

Keep in touch

"Thelodge.jpg" - yes! very nice.

P.S. I think your latest shots of "country gent's" home are faultless - just awesome resolution, composition exposure etc.

How are you aiming your rig at the target??
