I am starting my Vario 500E build and thought I would share, now the disclaimer:
I am no master builder. I build to the best of my abilities and what I like. I will be using many resources that I have found on the Net so no ideas are mine. If you have any input to this build I would gladly appreciate it. Juggling two jobs a wife and kids my working time is limited so please bare with me.

Below is my build list taken from my other post, and following in subsiquent post, pics will be added. Right now I have my crappy camera phone but just purchased a nice digital SLR that should be here in about two weeks so the pics will get better. The camera won't make the garage look any better though, may be worst.

List:

Purchased:
Turbine fuse and acc.
12mm Vario swash and fowler
6mm 4 blade tail unit w/ scale blades
Helicommand Rigid
5x Hitec 7965MG Coreless Servos
Futaba 10c FASST
Smartfly Competition 12

Planning on:
HP5 mechanics
(3)7.4v 8800mah Lithium Ion (2 for Rx and Servos, 1 for ECU)
OF 12mm 5 Blade Head
OF 800mm S Blades

Looks like you have a good build going so far. Is that red glazing putty you are using for your body work? If so try using some light bondo type two part body putty instead. It's easier to paint over, drys, and is easy to sand and paint over. The red stuff can get brittle and flaky as well as take a few coats of primer to cover the red.

Good luck with the build.

Thanks, I did pick up some Bondo and some blueish green stuff that's suppose to work well with glass and easy to sand. The putty stuff is horrible.

The bluish/green stuff is what I was talking about. The stuff I have is call "metal works" and is great on fiberglass. Sounds like you're all set.

Below are pics of a quick mock up. The stock formers are useless, new ones will be created to match the new angle of the skids (the width of the skids have been increased).

adminaeg, have you got a name?
Having helped built a couple of Vario 500,s, The 2 cross members are correct, the legs will be at the correct angle to the body, you can alter the back 2, so that the tail sits lower, are you going for the high body or low body?, the low body is easily achieved by cutting the 4 legs shorter by The same amount
If you do not use the stock woodwork you will have problems lineing things like the tail drive tube, also getting the correct angle for the mainshaft exiting the body, the wood work has "L" shaped cut outs these are for the angles that support the mechanics, if the woodwork is fitted correctly everything else falls into place

Tail fin support

The tail fin has a tendency to wobble about, at some time dureing the start up process, once in the air it settles down, unless you have another problem of course,
we epoxied a 1" woven tape around the circumference if the tail tube to spread the load and epoxied in another bigger piece of ply

Hey Peter,

My name is at the bottom of my post, it's Aastan. Thanks for the advise. I am going for the high body. I have increased the width of the landing skids to approx. 21" so the skid angle has increased in the fuse and don't line up with the former cutout. I am going to duplicate the contours exactly including the "L" cutout position for the turbine alignment but just alter the skid angle cutouts. She still will maintain the slightly nose high attitude. The angle locator, although not very clear in the photo, shows a 2 degree nose high attitude.

Can you explain the tail reinforcements, I don't follow. Is the tape applied inside or out side the tail

Hi Mcfast,

Do you have any experience with that head. It was on the list in the beginning, but I couldn't find anyone that has used it on a large scale model and the grips measured to large for the chosen blades and didn't want to use spacers/shims.

Hi adminaeg
NO! I just thought it looked nice, but they use the same parts as my Gasser head, they are very nice and well made.

Aastan,The tape is applied all the way around on the inside, remember you still have a wood former to go in the end , so leave room for this, the reason for using the tape is because it has a woven edge, gives a nice controlled finish
