Aerial Photography and Video > Our Heli and Ground Support Setup

SkywalkerHeliman - Location: West Kentucky -
I thought I would share some pictures of our Low Level Aerial Photography setup.

This is a picture of our support van. It is a standard sized cargo van with a 58' Will-Burt pneumatic mast.

Here is a picture with the mast up. It takes about a minute to fully raise the mast. We use it whenever we don't want or need to launch the heli. It can raise a 90 pound payload and ends up being about 62' AGL.

This picture shows the camera operator's workstation. The operator views the video feed via the 17 in flat panel monitor with TV tuner. To his left is a VCR for recording the flight as well as a DVD player to pass the time on the long trips.

The final two pics show the Heli and components located in the back of the van. To the right is all the Heli support gear. (starter, fuel, tools, etc.)

To the left are two large deep cycle batteries. Above the batteries is a 3000w inverter. The inverter powers a complete A/C electrical system with breaker box and numerous 110v outlets throughout the van. It also powers the air compressor that is needed to raise the mast.

Thanks for looking

It has to be asked...

Where do ya get something like that and did it cost more than the van?

With the mast lowered, the top of the mast is just under twelve feet tall. No problem with bridges in the States, but you do have to watch out for low tree limbs and utility wires back in some subdivisions.

At full retail price, a new mast is about 12k! We bought this one used on E-bay for a SONG. The poor guy had absolutely no idea what he had or what it was worth.

We were able to complete the install ourselves saving additional bucks. (Jessie James and the Monster Garage crew have NOTHING on us...LOL!)

I'm sure the groom would have something to say about that!

I thought you guys may be interested in our Ground Station - you wear it! We have also used Virtual Reality glasses with switchable channels to view through additional cameras onboard. The pilot can optionally view helicopter parameters such as head rpm, altitude, GPS, voltages, current etc etc etcoverlaid onto the pretty landscapes!

I'm afraid I'm a newbie to RunRyder and I've just tried to import the picture of our GroundStation jacket but the instructions don't match the available buttons - typical software programming. And it's freeload Monday! Oh well never mind. Perhaps if I can master it then you may get to see it further down the thread.

Happy snapping
