Miniature Aircraft Nitro/Gas Helicopters > OS .91 Needle settings???

I know this belongs in the engine forum, but I thought I might get a better response here. I'm just starting to break this engine in on a Fury with a 8:18 gear ratio, and I was wondering if any of you guys who are already running this engine could please tell me where your needles ended up after the break-in process. I know that every engine is different, but I'd like to have a rough idea so I have something to work towards. I would appreciate any help you could give me.

Thanks,
Chad

OS 91 Settings

Hi,

My OS91 has about 2.5 gallons and i'm running it with the following settings:

Low end left at factory settings
Main needle 1 1/2 turns from close.

With the above settings my Fury runs great with an 1850 headspeed and 710 blades.

It highly depends on the muffler as well! I am using the Hatori 8.18 and I am about 2 gal into mine and run about 1/4 turn in from fully open on the low end and just under (about 1.4) turns out from fully closed on the high end. I am not there yet in terms of power and it is hard to find the right spot but I am working on it.

Low end is REAL sensitive! What kind of flight times are you guys getting? I have a 20 oz tank and a 2 oz header and am at about 11 minutes.

Needle settings

I am running the Hatori 80-90 muffler and enya #3 plug (OS 8 to touchy).
All of this was done at sea level 70-80 degrees F.
After 1 gallon of morgan fuel my main needle is 3-4 clicks beyound 1 full turn from closed, low end adjustment is slightly in the rich direction (3-4 degrees).
I found this engine, carburator to be touchy.
I used pony tank to reduce presure differences from a full tank. Ensure that all fuel passages are at least 3/32" and no less or you will expeirence lean off's at varying tank presures.
I recommend setting the low end at the neutral position and the main needle at 1-1/2 turns out. Then begin leaning the top end untill a smoth run is accomplished. Now fly the heli upstairs close or at full thottle, take notice to the smoke trail (less / more) and return to a hover.... running lean (pops / irregular / loader exhaust note). Richen the top 2-3 clicks try again, if still lean this time, ever so slightly richen the low end and repeat process again, of coarse reverse adjustments if running rich.
Slowly you will find a "Range" where the top end is fat enough to keep it cool at say no more than 9 degrees top end pitch with 700mm and when you return to hover quickly from a hard run the engine remains smooth, no poping or loader exhaust note. Then begin to richen very slightly the low end and you might see some extra power during extended vertical accents.
I hope this gets you going in the right direction, I had plenty of trouble with my OS 91 and nearly scrapped it for an YS 80.

Thanks for all the help guys! This is my current setup - Hatori SAB 15, Cool Power 15%, OS #8, SAB 710's(top end pitch of +10) and running a headspeed of 1850. Yesterday (50 degrees F) I had a chance to put several more tanks through this engine and mess with the needles a little more, and to tell you the truth, I'm a little suprised at what I came up with. I have the low end set at just a few degrees off center on the rich side, but to get a smooth run in a hover and on a full power climb out, I had to turn the high end needle three clicks under one full turn. I still have lots of smoke and there are absolutely no signs of overheating so far. In fact, it still seems to be a little on the rich side. It suprises me that I'm under a full turn, but if the engine isn't showing signs of overheating, I guess I'm alright at this setting.

Thanks for all your help!
