The check should have had a bank's name and tracking number on it. Trace the name of the bank. If you find a bank then ask them about the check using the serial number on the check.
However I doubt you will find a bank because this is screaming "SCAM"

yah man this definitely sounds like a scam, has he said how he wants you to transfer the 900 to his son? Western union likely....

I wouldn't use any of that money because you will likely get burned on it. Usually, the names never match up in any of these scams. Was the name on the check the same as the guy you think you are dealing with?

well, i went into the bank today to clear it up. Turns out the teller messed up and thought it was a canadian check and cleared it instantly, looking back i should have withdrawn the cash at that time. but after i left they realized it wasnt a canadian check and put the funds on hold, after the funds clear hold they are non reversable.

I guess we will wait and see..

Even if you had cashed that check, it would not have mattered. After that, and when it bounces, they still would have removed those funds from your account.

In US banks have 10 days to clear a check. You can make a check out of piece of paper and if the teller cash it and they didn't clear it for 10 days money is yours.

Its Government regulation of some sort.

Funny, you may have said something more truthful than you or others may know....Legally you can make a check out of a shingle or scrap wood if you want. If you have the routing number, account number, check ammount and signature on it, it is legal.

The bank will take it and create a "substitute" check (for obvious logistical reasons) to send to the clearing house!

Also, LEGALLY, if given a check as payment you can verify funds.....most banks have automated numbers for this (call the bank name on the check, ask for merchant verification) and they can tell you if the account has enough funds to cover that check at that time....if that bank is local to you, you can walk in with a drivers license and walk out with cash at that point.

I wouldn't spend a penny of that money for a month or so.Chances are YOU would be paying it back.

Don't give him a thing or send the money to his "son" unless you are willing to gamble with loosing it. They may have told you that you are in the clear, but I would wait at least a month. Hang onto the cash and don't pay your loan off just yet. This smells like a scam for sure.

Real simple

Don't tell him you cashed the check, tell him to cancel the check and that this is the best you can do. Then see what happens... If you have cash in hand, hang onto it for at least a month or two.
