The Flying Cam people are actually geeky at heart just like any other heli enthusiast. I had a conversation with one of their team a few years ago at NAB when the Red camera was just about to ship. I asked them if they had seen the camera and he said that they had one on order and would be one of the first to get one. It would be heavy, but in the range of the cameras they already lift. He asked me what I thought of the Red camera after seeing the Peter Jackson short, and I replied "film is dead."

One funny thing is that their display helicopter is not a real heli. They used to display one of the ships, but people would get a bit too curious and start taking the side covers off to see inside.

lol i could see myself doing that.

and he did have a french accent...

I guess they have got some money from clients or they got really good investors..

"After the strength acquired through two decades of pioneering successful design and services with the Flying-Cam I and lately the Flying-Cam II, the Flying-Cam company is now investing more than 2 Millions Dollars in the Flying-Cam III Diamond."

The images can also be stabilized with motion control software in post production, so many of the instabilities can be taken out.
THis makes the final footage very stable and smooth. I'm sure the raw footage is not as stable as what you see in the final finished film.

I do wonder what their liability insurance costs are? We all know things can happen, things break, etc. They are not immune to those problems either. I'm sure the've had incidences, but also have the experience behind them. Either way, the insurance is most likey pretty expensive. I wonder if they are a write in under the production companies policy, in addition to their own coverage.
