Blades, Night Flying and Painting > Pactra Racing Finish Disaster...

I have tried twice now to paint my canopy with Pactra Racing Finish. I am using the White Change-Color (pearl) paint. The first time I used an air brush and it looked all blotchy and streaked. The second time I used an auto finishing gun (the small 7 oz. kind). And I thinned it down using 50-50 ratio and it ran the paint and looked orange peel. My questions are these:

1. When using this paint, what should the gun air pressue be? I have used about 30-40 PSI in both the airbrush and the paint gun.

2. Does the pactra racing finish need to be thinned down? I have tried it both ways, the first way not thinned in the airbrush and it seemed like it wasnt flowing, the second was in the paint gun and it was thinned 50-50 with the recommended thinner and it ran.

3. How warm does it need to be? It is about 60 degrees here right now.

Is there any special method/technique someone can help me with? This is really frustrating and I have experience painting so I know its not me. I even painted a motorcyle once with a really trick pearl and it came out great.

Thanks,
Matt

My friend and I were just using Pactra to paint a canopies this weekend. We found that thinning the pactra about 50-50 did work best. If you are getting it to run try lowering the pressure, or adjusting the tip of the airbrush until you dont get air bubbles in it. Also make sure you spray multiple light passes of paint, this helps it to keep from running. I found that if i lightly coated the entire area i was painting by the time i got one coat done you could go back over it and it was set up enough to keep from running. Also i hope you scuffed well. We found that it had trouble sticking to a fiberglass canopies in the crevices that didnt get thoroughly scuffed. Now that I look back on it... and have read posts... maybe adhesion promoter could have been beneficial. I think youll be happy with the outcome you get. I have been pretty happy with how mine is looking. Just a few more touchups and its off to be cleared. Ill try to post a few pictures to my gallery tonite if you are interested. Check the paint section as there have been some good forums on canopy painting. If you want some more pactra advice see mikencg's post there. Good luck.
Oh and we painted in the basement... prob about 70 deg. I believe that is what is reccomended.

Joe how cold does it get there? I deal with temps like 20 below up here! Oh by the way you can paint at 50 degrees. That easy. As long as the item and the paint are same temp!! And you can that touch up gun down to 20psi! And paint. Here said it was a 7oz. gun. To me that's a touch up gun. That's nothing like the Iwata LPH-400 I use to clear with,.

Yeah, that is what it is, a touch-up gun. They suggest 30 PSI but I thought that was the cause possibly of the orange peel? The other thing that sucks about this paint color is that it is impossible to see until after it has semi dried and is very very transparent, so if a previous coat is streaked or blotchy I have found that painting multiple coats over it doesnt seem to do any good. What has been your solution to this?
