In my forum-whoring I've come across all kinds of ambitious projects, some of which seem contradictory in nature.

A guy at a UK forum has turned his King 2 into a coax.

One of "our" guys has turned a CX into an FP.

Somebody with WAY too much time on his hands at RCG (EQMOD) has added Bell-Hiller mixing to a 4#3, amongst many other things.

I spent hours figuring out how to fit a TREX articulated tail slider onto a King, then got a TREX a few days later and raped the King of its electronics for the TREX. The King now sits in less than BB fashion awaiting the day it may fly again.

Let's put an Xtreme 43T tail pulley on the King to speed up the tail, and then put the Xtreme tail shaft gear on it to slow it down. (That one kills me.)

Now let's get the fastest digital servos we can find for cyclic and then ask how much expo we should use.

I love this hobby. If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is.

The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain.

It is funny Shizack I think sometimes it a case of " I wonder if this would work" and then you try it and it does Its a good feeling Many in this hobby love to tinker and experiment just as much as fly. On the other end of the spectrum are the people who say "if I just had this mod" I would be a much better pilot . Sometimes it is better to leave well enough alone. I did see the video's of the guy who turned his King into a co-ax . Most of us would say WHY ? He probably just wanted to see IF he could do it.

my favotite is this one, guy buys a brand new Mini titan,he then puts a t-rex head on it, align skids, motor and esc, main gear and shaft...HHHHUUUUHHHHH

but some guys just like to tinker, most of my helis are still stock.while I dont mind tinkering,I love flying more,to each his own, thats what this hobby is all about, do what you want

I prefer the challenge of geting the most performance out of the stock set up,which I'm still working on,some guys prefer the challenge of seeing how much they can mod a project, whatever floats your boat

Then you got nothing to do but fly But let me also add(oh boy, here goes Dougie again There is an "inventors spirit" especially in America. Hell, we wouldn't even have RC heli's to modify if someone somewhere didn't say -- Hey, I wonder if I could make a Radio controlled version of that full sized helicopter--- but smaller. Whoever made the first RC heli and flew it successfully must have been pretty amazed at himself . No Sims or parts support either

Back in the 1920 era, an 16 year old kid built one and got it to fly. And is was ELECTRIC. Of course radio control didn't exists nor did lipos, so he had wires running to it. The homemade controls looked like big boxes strapped to his waist.
It wasn't Skiorsky, but he also became a famous helicopter designer.

Zenith used to make really good TVs. They'd design an awesome TV that was too expensive to sell, then they'd start removing things and then when it was affordable to sell and still worked well, the'd stop.

I think that is the opposite of what many of us do. We keep doing mods to the heli and it gets better, then we stop and step back once we make it worse.

Yes, it stops when we go broke.

I used to have all the time and no money. I got better because I'd just fly.
Now I have enough money and no time. Now I just skip lunch

Melnic, remember Muntz TV. Inside they looked like they came from a salvage yard with so many hole in the chassie and parts that didn't fit so they were pop rivited by on edge.

Priceless Shiz!

Yep, I'm guilty of this. In fact, I was just thinking about this very thing this morning. I'm definitely in the category of a tinkerer. I really do prefer to tinker with them, over flying them. I like the challenge of "can I make this work". Once that's done, it's just another heli, and time to think up the next hair brained idea (yeah, like turning a coax into an fp, and the guy who went the other direction, and turned a cp into a coax).

I had a guy at the LHS ask me "why" (in reference to the cx project), I just shrugged and said: "it'a hobby". I think that sums it up.

2old, your frankenheli is pretty cool. It takes alot of creative thinking to do something that hasn't been done before. I put a HB King tailboom and belt drive on a Blade CP just to see if it would work--- and it did Fun stuff !! I called it the "DougNstein"

Thanks Doug! I'm pretty happy with it. (although, now I'm eyeing the flybar, and asking "why do I need that?".. all it provides is dampening, there is no swash to flybar link, so why have it there? My next project will be to remove the flybar.).

The belt tail on the blade cp is good stuff! Compy is making a living providing a belt drive fp! Now Guru-Z has a full up fiber frame with a belt drive tail that can be built up as either an FP, or a CP! Marvelous stuff! This is all the stuff that makes this hobby what it is!

If we didn't tinker, helis would never have gotten off the ground.

I'm downgrade on my parts.

I use servos that are cheaper then stock ones. I also use blades that are much cheaper then stock as well.

I don't want to get to far "off-topics" and ruin Shizacks Great thread but this is a Freaky old video you might enjoy 2old2fly' that demonstrates the inventors spirit! For those of you who haven't seen it !

Doug,
Thanks for posting that. Classic stuff from the golden age of RC Helis. Where would we be without the creative spirit that went into building those early helis?

So, to answer Shizaks question: "I hope it NEVER ends!"
