G4.5 is out, and it's a free update from G4.0

It's a big download though, plan to have broadband if you're going to download it. Mine is downloading now. I'm going to bed, and am going to let it run. I'll give a (simple) report tomorrow.

It only took a few minutes to download with my fiber connection.

I ended up waiting for mine last night. The D/L didn't take all that long over my slow ol' cable (I "only" get 10-12gb/s).

I fired it up for a quick test run last night. Despite a long list of "improvements" from Realflight, I didn't see anything Earth shattering. The writeup was going on about how they improved crashes.. baugh! They totally screwed up crashes! Now, on helis, the blades can go "into" the ground a bit before it registers as a crash, and even then, half the time it doesn't actually crash, it just does a weird chicken dance, without actually breaking anything.
The crashes were far more realistic on G4.

My Trex v2 models won't fly at all now, but the Trex 600 flies like a champ.
They changed my favorite old standby the Schweitzer. It's now sports a 3 bladed main, and doesn't fly as nice. I'm disapointed, but I wasn't flying it that much any more anyway.

There's a couple of new airplanes, and a couple of new helis.

As upgrades go, I'm glad I didn't have to pay for it.
I guess I'll have to dig around harder to find some improvement that made the download worth the bandwidth it burned.

I'm sure many will be presenting some in-depth evaluations of it, but from my office chair viewpoint, it seems that this one did more harm than good. I'm almost tempted to just reload 4.0

Not surprising. The competitive spirit runs deep.

I see this all the time in the Linux wars. One distribution does a release, and all the rest are right behind it.

I had to re-install DirextX to get G4.5 to correctly display the graphics on my laptop . Unfortunately , even with everything turned down to the lowest settings , I'm only getting 5-7 fps on the Photofields !
Previously I was getting over 30fps with medium settings on the Photofields .
It does run fine on my Desktop .

At the end of the day , it gets dark .

Well I am getting it at about 500-800Kbs so I should have it in 20 or so minutes. Too bad it is the clubs copy and another member has the radio right now or I could try it.

That's pretty studly speed there Chris. Especially considering the server is probably getting hammered today. What's your link speed?

Here' mine using the SpeakEasy Test.

I can't remember what the campus has but it is big, maybe an OC12 if memory serves me correctly but that is only one of 4 pipes leaving campus. Another goes south on I1 and then there are one sounth and one north on I2. As for testing, I really don't have anywhere close to test with but here is what I get right now. Due remember that the students slow things down considerably.

To Dallas (825mi away)
Down=5447kbps
Up=871kbps

To LA (850mi away)
Down=4994kbps
Up=1025kbps

To Seattle (1550mi away)
Down=11698kbps
Up=1774kbps

I usually get 1.2MBs download rates per download on decent servers. When I am downloading several DVDs at once I have seen teh connection hold 3 1.2MBs downloads simultaneously. Oh and at home I am on a 1Mbps DSL.

FWIW: I was averaging about 650kbs on the download.

Greg you got me more interested in see what the old campus connection could handle, so I found http://www.speedtest.net/ and tested a few places closer to home. Appears my connection to Phoenix is pretty good with 20879Kbps down and 4791Kbps up. Oh and the Vancouver site is good too at 21729 down and 3527 up.

I'm still talk'n to you Mike But I don't have RF so I had no comments to your post.

Chris, that's some pretty good speed. Thanks for the alternate site. Quite a few more options for servers to connect to. I tried Montreal (I'm in Seattle) and it was about 7000 down. The local servers are about 9800.
