Window tintings...

BladeRunner,
The windows were a real problem at first. I tried RIT DYE without much sucess. I think maybe I didn't have the water hot enough. I was VERY nervous about overheating the water and getting the windows to the point that they warped. The color was light and uneven, probably from the heat variences. I did get a very mild warp in one of the front door panels but it's usable.

I fiddled with it a few days and finally gave up as it wasn't giving me the results I was expecting. I went the the LHS and bought a small can of Window Tint spray that was over in the RC Car section. I bought the dark smoke.
I tested it out on some scrap pieces of glass and found it to be very thin and very runny. Running out of options I went ahead with very light coats on the inside. I let each coat dry quite well and built it up with about 4 or 5 coats until I got the desired effect. I must say I am very satisfied with my results. The glass is quite dark at an angle yet shiny, if you look through the glass in the light it is transparent so it isn't solid opaque black. I'm guessing I will still be able to see me GEM 2000 monitor inside the ship in flight.

Peter,
I know what you are saying and it does make sense about the exhaust. I am going to try 1-1/4" tubing and reduce it down at the pipe with a very short piece of 1/2 inch tubing. I just don't know what type of tubing is safe. Do you think the clear vinyl tubing found at hardware stores would hold up? It is pretty tuff stuff, the walls are 1/8" thick and it is flexible, I just don't know if it can withstand the heat and nitro. Any ideas on what tubing works best? Weight is an issue so whatever I do I want it as light as possible.

Steve,
Good to hear from you! And I have been busy! Man these scale birds are quite a handful to build.
I'm planning on coming to the Jet Event at Tx Motor Speedway in March, I bet you'll have that turbine Roo there? I may have the 500 finished by then and maybe I can bring it out.

Are you working that event? And, where on the grounds will it be?

On the exhaust. You can also get the largest diameter tuned pipe coupling / exhaust line available. My LHS has them with 1 inch inside diameter. Then double/triple it up at the muffler end and secure it with a big ass clamp and some silicone sealer. The other end of the big exhaust line can be centered in the fuse exhaust outlet. I run this setup about 8 inches long in my 222 with OS61LX / Hatori and it works very well.

Shot the base color today..

After way, way too much pin hole filling and sanding I shot a base coat of color today with my touch up gun. It was my first time to use the gun and it worked great. So much more versatile than a spray can or an airbrush. I have to sand the nose piece again and fill in some re-occuring pinholes that is really starting to p*ss me off. The fuselage looks good and the paint went on very nicely. I plan to put a final thicker topcoat to give it a nice gloss finish.

I tested some exhaust tubing on the Raptor today following Peter's suggestion about opening my exhaust up larger. I doubt the tubing I have will be the actual one because it is that clear vinyl tubing you get at the hardware stores. I don't think it will handle the heat of a full flight. I added 3 different sized sections together, a 1/2" ID that slipped on the exhaust nipple and then about a inch out I slipped it inside another piece of 3/4" ID tubing about two inches long which slips inside another piece of tubing that is 1" in diameter.

I only ran about a half talk of gas through it and didn't lift off as the wind was blowing about 35 MPH today... sheese. anyway, after the running, I felt the tubing, it wasn't melting or anything like that, it just felt slightly softer from the heat. It looks like the tubing will work and let the motor breathe properly, I just don't think it can stand up to the heat. I will test fly it as soon as the weather and schedule permits.

I hope to have some pics tomorrow night showing the base color, not much to look at yet, just a yelo heli right now.

I still don't know what is the best tubing to use, I can't find anyone local or online that sells silicone exhaust tubing in the sizes I need.
