Hey guys,

After seeing all the wonderful scale helis being built out there I figured it was my turn to show where my project is.

I have the first coat of white primer on the heli this weekend and it is going well. Maybe next weekend I can get my base color down.

Here it is:

H500E mechanics

John,

The mechanics are a Raptor 60 with an OS61WC and a Hatori pipe.
You can see my 500 project in progress on my website.

Click on my HomePage link below my name and it will take you to my website. Once there, click on the MD500E link on the nav bar on the left side. I have pics from the beginning.

final paint scheme

Cerberus,

I have indeed decided on a final paint scheme. I already have the clear vinyl decals in hand that I designed after the full scale bird.

Here's what it should look like:

kewl eh?

To see the assembly in progress, I've been maintaining a webpage with pictures and some dialog regarding the kit and the assembly. You can find it in my homepage link or go straight to it HERE

BRIAN!

Where the heck have you been? Me been thinkin' maybe you got sucked up the carb of that OS 50 you have

Suppose you got down to Corpus for Ron's event with Andy? I couldn't get an extra day off so I had to pass. I did get some good flying in that weekend though, it was really nice here.

Rich,
The kit is pretty good, there are some problems Century REALLY needs to address. But you can modify and work around them for the most part and make a very nice looking heli. This has been a labor of love. If I had it to do over, I'd probably look harder at the Vario 500 kit.

When I stumbled on the paint scheme of the real one I knew I had to build one, always had a special liking of the 500E body anyway.

The kit turns out to be quite large. I think it's going to look a lot better with some color on it. I've finished sanding out the base primer coat and some spot putty repairs and now it's ready for the last primer coat. With any luck I can have some color on it this weekend.

scale exhaust

hey RaptorDriver,
i read in an older post that you were going to vent the exhaust thru the scale exhaust port, are you still going to do this? and if you did, has it worked out ok?
thanx

H500E Exhaust

cerberus,

I am indeed routing the exhaust out the scale tail pipe.

You can see on my website a picture showing the tail pipe with the bifercated (split) exhaust. What I did was get a small 2" plastic funnel and glue it into the tail pipe on the body. I got some black rubber exhaust tubing from my LHS (about one foot long) and it is long enough to go from the Hatori muffler to the tip of the funnel and out the back.

I know it sounds kinda cheesy but it actually looks pretty good, I added a piece of 30 mil lexan cut out to match the inside shape of the funnel to give it the split look. It will be painted flat black.

There was simply no way I was going to cut a hole in the bottom of the body and run the exhaust out the bottom. If I have to have smoke coming out of this thing it darn well will be coming out of the proper orifice.

here is the only pic I have at the moment showing the exhaust port.

If the rubber tubing is the same diameter as your exhaust outlet, it will cause enormous back pressure and give you severe engine running problems. To check this out, fit the same length tubing onto your Raptor and see how it flies.

To get the effect you are looking for, may I suggest a very large diameter tube from the scale exhaust to a place close to the muffler outlet, and then the smaller diameter tubing to couple it.

exhaust tubing

Peter,

Thanks for the heads up on the exhaust tubing.

I assumed if it were the same diameter as the exhaust port of the muffler I would be OK. The tubing length is about one foot from the back of the pipe to the outlet of the scale body. it is the same size as the exhaust nipple on the hatori muffler.

I have the mechanics out of the heli and am still breaking in a new engine for it. I think I will heed your advise and put the tubing on the muffler and run it down the boom and see what happens.

Peter, can you tell me what I need to watch for as far as back pressure problems? I really don't know what kind of problems I will encounter. Does the engine run rich, lean or just inconsistant?

Also, what type of tubing is safe? Obviously I don't want or need any engine problems and info insight you might offer would certainly be appreciated and heeded.

Now would be the time for me to make any adjustments as I still haven't painted it, only a base coat of primer.

It wouldn't be very difficult to cut the funnel piece out larger to accept a larger pipe. Do you think a 1" tube would be okay to reduce back pressure and have just a short coupling hose? The hose now is about 1/2 inch in diameter.

Thanks,

Raymond

So far this is looking great! Did you tint the windows as you said with the dye? They are a perfect color. What is the recipe for the tint if you don't mind me asking?

what happens when you block the exhaust is that the gases dont get out and new mixture cant get in. So at high power ratings, the engine will start to bog down and overheat. I have a feeling that with 1 foot of hose, it may not even hover, and messing with the mixture will only make things worse.

What I was thinking you may want to do is to continue the split exhaust moulding in the fuse, further in and make the exhaust "final" part 2inches or more in diameter, then make a short link to your muffler exit. If you can do this, I would line the exit with some very thin ally sheet. The problem is going to be the condensed exhaust on the surface of whatever you put there, its going to be a mess. You could use a coke can with the ends cut off for this, nice and seamless.

If that is not practical, then make the muffler exit as big as possible. Then make up a model of it and hang it on your Raptor and see how it goes.
