Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > YS engine opinions needed on this.

Here are some pics of a ys engine I've rebuilt. I rebuilt my os hyper not too long ago with no problems. But here are some pics of the engine on the third tank. It was installed in an evo 50. The main needle was set at 1.75 turns out. The low end needle was set a little bit under 1 turn because at 1 turn the engine would quit when going from idle to mid stick. The manual I read online and from talking to the support at ys parts and repair, I needed to break it in a little rich. The 1.5 turns is what's in the manual and the 1 turn on the low end. The fuel lines used are new. The tank doesn't leak. The muffler was tight. So, why like this?

Check valve, or regulator.

You think your kids are expensive now?

Just wait until they move out!!

I blew through the valve prior to installing it on the engine. I needed to know which direction was out. The manual also said to have the check valve 3.5 cm out.

That leaves the regulator/diaphram, or some type of fuel line blockage or restriction

The scratches on the piston suggest that dirt had gone in to the engine most likely inhaled through the carb. The scratches would therefore cause the engine to lean out at any settings with the carb needles. Therefore the last picture depicts the result of leaning out.

when I got this engine from my friend, he had run it lean and had scratches like those, but more severe. I had replaced the piston, sleeve, ring and head gasket. I believe the scratches come from the head gasket breaking apart when it runs lean. According to the manual and the guy at yspartsandservice.com running it 1.75 turns on the main needle is rich. So, I'm thinking as was said, its the regulator.

Mine did the same thing a few months ago, I finally got around to ordering a new piston and linear last week. I'll let you know how mine turns out again. Never had a problem like this before, my last hyper I had for five years without any problems so I know it's not my tunning.

I once choked a smurf to see what color it would trun

Did you check that your fuel system is air tight? The YS WILL run with the vent line unplugged (no tank pressure), but it runs VERY lean.

My YS is running about 1 3/8 out now.

Whilst not out of the question, it is more likely the scratches on the piston wall are from a lean run. When engines get hot the oil burns off (the black head indicates this) you then get bare steel on steel with no lubrication. Eventually the piston wall, ring and cylinder brakedown (the scratches). And if left to run in this state the engine would eventually seize.

To every action there is always opposed an equal reaction

I agree. It looks like my buddy's YS piston with scoring. He has had lean runs not due to needle settings. He found a hairline crack at the base of his regulator after two pistons and liners.

Called ys today about it. They said to send it in. We will see what they say. Basically, I have 100 in a rebuild for it now. The engine is only 225 new. Another 100 for another rebuild wouldn't be worth it, especially, if the cause of it going lean isn't found out and fixed.
