Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Warm TT53 ??

Hi,

Is it normal to have the the back plate hot to the touch on a TT53??

No matter how much I tune, I can't get the back plate to go cool. The engine runs well and does what it should, but never gets cool on 30% Wildcat.

is this normal?

Thanks

Rob.

In a word-no. There is something wrong with the fuel delivery. You should be able to richen up the fuel mixture and get it to run cool.

Depends. Hot is a relative term. Hot to me may not be hot to you. Sort of subjective if you know what I mean. Best to use a laser temperature gun.

The book says to adjust mid and top needle at the same time. If I richen up the mid needle anymore it will just cut when trying to lift from tick-over. I can richen the top needle on it's own, but will this have an effect to the mid range and keep the heat down. We are running two engines in two different helis flying in different ways, but there both hot on the back plate. By hot, I mean you can leave you finger on it, but you wouldn't want to for more than 20 seconds. There's plenty of smoke, but what would the proper hear reading be if I were to use a heat gun?

Thanks.

Rob,

That is not "hot" per se........ If you can leave your finger on the backplate for 20 seconds, sounds to me that you're on the "rich" side and the motor may not be developing the power it COULD be developing....BUT, if you're happy with the way it's running and the performance is acceptable, I would leave it alone !! A richer running motor will last you a long time !

The rule of thumb (pun intended !) is that if you can leave your finger pressed against the backplate for 5-6 seconds, you are OK...... If you can only leave your finger for only 2-3 seconds before having to remove your finger, then you're too hot.....

Heatguns are a waste of money, IMO......because there are no published temp readings for comparison and you'll not get the same answer from two different people.....

As a comparison, my TT 50 runs like a top, plenty of power, lots of smoke on Wildcat 30 but it does feel warmer to the touch on the backplate as compared to some OS's I have had, even after doing the "needle mod" to the low end needle....This motor has given plenty of people fits to tune....

I do have to run my low end very rich , though, and have to either pinch the fuel line as I carry the heli to the flight line or run the idle pretty high otherwise the motor will stall due to excess fuel..... Once it warms up it fine so I don't worry about it.

That's a fantastic answer JuanRodriguez, It sounds like I have no problems

Were running the 'new' carb on both engines and have no problems at all with ticking over, they run like watches and throttle up very well.

I'm well happy with these engines so far, plenty of power.

Thanks

Rob

This has probably been posted before, but there are so many different ways to tune an engine. What is the best way for a newb to tune? For example I think the best way would be to tune by the temp and sound of the engine, but I have not learned what to listen to/for except the engine hanging on the pipe (2 stroking?) when coming out of idle up. So I mostly tune by temping the head and shoot for 220f.

If there is a good thread about this please link it.
