| By hop, I mean you can leave you finger on it, but you wouldn't want to for more than 20 seconds. There's plenty of smoke, but what would the proper hear reading be if I were to use a heat gun?

Rob,
That is not "hot" per se........ If you can leave your finger on the backplate for 20 seconds, sounds to me that you're on the "rich" side and the motor may not be developing the power it COULD be developing....BUT, if you're happy with the way it's running and the performance is acceptable, I would leave it alone !! A richer running motor will last you a long time !
The rule of thumb (pun intended !) is that if you can leave your finger pressed against the backplate for 5-6 seconds, you are OK...... If you can only leave your finger for only 2-3 seconds before having to remove your finger, then you're too hot.....
Heatguns are a waste of money, IMO......because there are no published temp readings for comparison and you'll not get the same answer from two different people.....
As a comparison, my TT 50 runs like a top, plenty of power, lots of smoke on Wildcat 30 but it does feel warmer to the touch on the backplate as compared to some OS's I have had, even after doing the "needle mod" to the low end needle....This motor has given plenty of people fits to tune....
I do have to run my low end very rich , though, and have to either pinch the fuel line as I carry the heli to the flight line or run the idle pretty high otherwise the motor will stall due to excess fuel..... Once it warms up it fine so I don't worry about it. |
