Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Carbon Tail Drive upgrade

Hi

I'm in the middle of building a Bell 222 which has the Hawk III mechanics. I've done numerous upgrades, one of which is replacing the wire tail drive with a carbon torque tube. I can cut the tube to the correct length etc, and JB weld the connectors on each end. The question I have is how do I get the thing hooked up to the tail. The fittings on the hawk only seem compatible with the wire drive. Are there more parts I need to buy ?

thanks for any advice

to use a torque tube you need the dogbone connectors that go to the tail drive gears. its a whole setup, but it never breaks. ask lift, i think this is his fifth crash with the same torque tube.

You just bought the Tube?

There is a torque tube upgrade kit that included the Dogbone cups for both the transmission and the tail rotor box. After you have those if it ever breaks then you just buy a new tube.

yes, i bought the kit. I can see how the dog bones fit into the white round cups on each end. I just don't see how the cups get attached to the main gear and tail gear.

thanks!

you need to use the shafts that come with the torque tube kit, just find the flat spot and insert it into the dogbone connector, use a setscrew and youre set. the gear goes on the other end. take a look at the falcon/raven manual at www.centuryheli.com for help.

the fittings that came with the carbon tube accept a 5mm rod at each end. the fittings that came with the hawk kit assume a wire tail drive so are not 5mm. there's a mismatch here, has anyone successfully installed this torque tube on a hawk III kit ? Am I missing something here ?

thanks!

The tubes DO break

Its a great upgrade, and worth the trouble. My first crash with it in was a boom strike on an auto and it rapped the tail boom hard enough to crush the whole works. $24 and a new TT, on my way again.

techtime, do you have the part # that you used ? I'm using CN0507, but it's looking like I also need to buy 2 other parts to correctly hook up the tail and main gears to the shaft.

lewma,
The upgrade set is CN0520:
http://65.215.192.230/Merchant2/mer...uct_Code=CN0520

You bought the CN0507 "UNIVERSAL,SCALE FUSELAGE CARBON TAIL DRIVE" set. I don't think that is what you wanted. Your kit doesn't have the plastic couplers that the TT dogbones ride in? These are what you are supposed to use to replace the wire drive couplers on you Hawk.

I have the plastic couplers, I'm just missing a 5mm rod at each end that goes from the couplers to the gears. I looked on the century website and I think I need HW3070A and HW3059A. Does this look right ?

Originally I ordered CN0520 but because the hawk mechanics are going in a Bell222 fuse, the boom is 10mm shorter. I returned 0520 and bought 0507 so I could make the rod to the correct length.

Lewma,
The 0520 upgrade set is supposed to come with the couplers designed to fit the existing shafts. I'm confused myself because no one has ever posted on here regarding a fitment problem with the couplers in that set when installed on a Hawk.

The ones you have listed above are for the SE & Raven 50, which BTW are all TT driven helis. So, they should fit just fine. You can certainly look at their manuals at Century's website.

But, something is not right. You should have been able to fit the couplers in that 0507 set on the shafts. Can you measure them and tell us what ID they have? Also, you might want to call Century and see what they say.

Hi Guys,
The century Kit I just installed came complete with new shafts to attach/ replace both the front and rear connection to the drive gears on one end & the Dog Bone Coupler on the other.

Best to call Century or email Oldlfart pnoel@dccnet.com and get the correct Part #s

Problem Solved....... (almost)

I talked with 'Pete' from Century on Monday. He called me and said that I should be using CN0520 ( not CN0507 ). I said to him that 0507 was recommended to me by his guys, but there must have been some mixup somewhere. Anyway, he's sending me a CN0520 free of charge and I don't have to send back 0507 either! Great customer service by Heliworld, in the end!

Mark,
Did he have an Asian accent. It was probably Peter Chao, owner of Century. Pretty cool for him to contact you and hook you up like that.....

That was probably him. Usually I email with Nancy Chao and she is very responsive and helpful. Peter certainly gave me the feeling that they were interested in solving my problem.

I wish Century Would have treated me that good. Heck with the amount of money I have spent there over the last 10 years you would think I would get a B-day Card or something other then head aches from them
