Those "bean bags" are my soft SCUBA weights. I was looking around the shop for weights and that's what I had handy.

Got the tail filler blocks in.

Lextex,

the "bean bags" seen in the previous pictures are more commonly known as "drawing weight bags"

Drawing Weight Bags are very handy to have in and out of the office. In the office, they hold down drawings so that air doesn't blow your drawing around. And anyone knows that if you unroll a rolled drawing it doesn't want to lay flat, hence the need for drawing weights or shot bags as they are sometimes called. Outsize, they're great to have on a construction site, or on the hood of your pickup truck when discussing construction plans.

They can be had from "engineering supply" or "drafting supply" houses. One well known manufacturer is "Alvin"

Got the bottom rear fuse sheeted. Also sheeted the area topside immediately around the vertical fin.

Looks like a good spot for an access panel. I like to have acccess to my linkages.

(The Apache came in today !)

You will love the apache. It kicks a@@. How much time do you spend on this bird? I put in about 1/2 an hour a night and its coming along. The good thing about balsa is if you are not happy with they something looks its easy to fabricate a new one. I'm on my third canopy right now

Well, finally bit the bullet last night...ordered my Cobra from Dr. Tim! Can't wait to get it going. Going to try and have it ready for Birmingham next year.

Sheeted the nose areas.

Used up some leftovers for the bottom nose area.

Installed the 3/8" triangle stock inside the fuse.

Kinda looks like a Cobra a little bit

Wren you will not regret it. I still have the transmission area ahead of me. But, so far the build has been straightforward and fun.

DogWood good luck sir! I am tied up on the Cobra so it will be a while before I get to the Apache. Planning a 4-blade head on the Apache if I can do it. Never flown a multi-blade rotor before. I always put several test flights on the mechs prior to installing into any scale project. And I am sure the 4-blade setup will require some learning on my part. (Planning on an SK-360 to help)

Patrick, I actually plan the same, 4 blade main and a 4 blade tail.
I also plan on making them spin the "right" way, so steep learning curve.

I'm currently thinking I will augment my flying "skills" with either a GU-365 or a SK-360 flybar less system to help keep things stabilized.

Not sure when I will actually get to start on my build, need to find/make space in my hobby room.

Hopefully not too far in the future

Dogwood, We have the SK-360 on one of our 50 helicopters. Flies great and is super easy to set up!

Removeable Belt and Pulleys

OK, I know the Doc said I didn't have to and most of you probably won't either, but I HAD to make the belt and pulleys removeable. Couldn't stand it. Just had to. I like to be able to get to and work on stuff. Period.

So, having said that, here is what I did.
(My apologies for the not-so-in-focus photos)

Made a hatch in the bottom from which inspection, cleaning, and pulley removal / installation is carried out.

Drilled a couple small holes in both sides to access the pulley axels. Axels can be punched in or out now. (NOTE: Precision is necessary in the drilling process to prevent damage to the black plastic bushings)

Steps for belt removal.

1. open lower hatch and disconnect rudder servo linkage.

2. punch out pulley axel and remove toothed pulley.

3. remove belt through tail rotor tube.

Installation is the reverse of removal.
(Note: Both pulleys are removeable if need be, but only the toothed pulley is required for belt removal.)

OK - I'll bite

Even if it reminds me of all the nice planks I've built long ago. Thats what I miss most about planks is the building and working with wood. Nice work there by the way!!

Wow, received my kit in the mail today! Can't start on it till after Christmas......bummer. Did order the Swift 16 yesterday. Looks like I'm going to go ahead and make it flybarless. It's going look super good without the flybar!

I'm looking forward to the finishing process. I would imagine there is a lot of sanding and filling. After all Cobras don't have woodgrain.

Good luck Wren. Let me know how that goes. I'll probably just be starting on the Apache around the time you start on the Cobra.

Yep Just make sure you have a good place for it. Also, a good shop vac and some compressed air don't hurt either.

DogWood...sweet job on the removable belt.
Thanks dogwood. Makes me feel better knowing I can replace components if need be. I don't build hangar queens.

Me too. Also, I like being able to fabricate parts or repair parts should the need arise. Balsa and ply are easy to work with.

I am looking forward to the detailing. This will be my first attempt at rivets.
