Scale Model RC Helicopters > Electric Mechanics for .30 Scale Helicopters?

I was planning to get an Thunder Tiger E550 to use in a .30 scale fuselage from Century but I was told the E550 is a .50 size helicopter. I was looking at either the Jet Ranger or Longer Ranger Fuselages. I had picked the E550 as it is a nice size helicopter that fits my budget for a newbie to flying. My longer range plans were to convert it to flybarless, then after learning to fly that well, add on the fuselage.

Now I'm not sure what to get for something to grow with. Century sells a mechanics for their .30 fuselage but it seems geared toward using a nitro engine. I didn't see anything for electric conversion and I don't it would be good to learn.

Any suggestions for electric mechanics/kits that I could eventually use for a .30 fuselage?

I went the E-550 way but with a 50 size fuse from Funkey, you would just need to use the longer tail boom and maybe go to 600mm blades.
The E550 is a great heli for scale, flies nice and easy.

If I was to go with the 600mm blades, would I have to upgrade the motor and rotor head? Or could I still use the 6s battery and motor setup for the E550?

Thanks for replying!

Yes I read that. I got the recommendation that the Swift with it's lower profile tail boom wasn't a good choice for the fuselage. Bit of work in raising the tail boom. The E550 was recommended vs the Swift when I ask about the two of them.

You can use the stock rotor head, I did, but slowed it down by using a 9 tooth pinion. I also used an 800kv motor and fly on 10s a123 batteries.

I have read of a number of Swifts that seem to have easily fit in a number of the Century 30 size fuselages.

Any mechanics you pick that are not specifically for the fuselage will require some extra work to fit. But it seems the Swift is one that will need minimal work.

You will note that they also currently have this sweet looking Coast Guard A109A with retracts already available for their Swift mechanics:

If their past history is any indication, I am sure there are more that they have planned for future release.

I haven't ruled them out yet. I'm looking for mechanics to fit either a Bell Jet Ranger or Long Ranger. That would seem to require a boom tail that is higher up on the frame. The Swift 16 looks too low in the frame so not sure how much modification would be needed.

Still researching. So far Century hasn't responded to which of their electrics would fit their fuselages.

If you go to Century fuselages and click on the 50 size, scroll down and at the bottom there is is a Kit Compatibility Chart.

Thanks. I had download that already but it hasn't been update for 3 years unfortunately and only shows the .30 fuselage comparisons when you click on the .50 fuselage link. All the helis listed appeared to be nitros from the samples I checked out. I wrote to Century asking about electrics but no response from them so far.

I got off work two hours early today so I finally got to check out the LHSs that I noted in the area. All are in the opposite direction from where I work so I only have weekend time to try to get there. Wasn't a good search. One didn't do RC but pointed me to another unknown shop just down the road. Second one was out of business. Tried the new place but closed on Wednesdays.

Hmmm, looks like I might be doing this all mail order as the two shops only can the micro stuff.

Have you checked out the Starwood site, they do give dimensions for some of the helis but most of it are 90 stuff.

Yes thanks. I started looking at them this afternoon. Was sure if the accessory stuff was too big or not for .50 scale. Saved a link as I build my spec list.
