Hey,

I am looking for a low cost "trainer" style heli for air video work, I am a pilot I just want a frame that has the least amount of parts that can fail. I don't want a machine that needs constant tweaking, I would like a gas bird...maybe in the 23-30cc sized? what would you buy in terms of a airframe for this type work? I have a pan tilt unit and will build my own front mount for it so the camera would have front and left/right view.

thanks for a link or 2 I can checkout some low cost highly reliable airframes.

Hmmmmmmm, might want to consider electric. Even then, you'll be constantly tweaking. It's the name of the game.

I agree with Trackhead. When I first got involved in this, I was naive and thought you just bought a heli and strapped a camera to it. after that it was just a matter of learning to fly.

Three Helicopters later ( Nitro, gasser, electric ) I realized that the flying is the easiest part of the whole deal. The nature of RC helis is constant tuning and tweaking, and even then imo an RC heli a lot of the time is a ticking time bomb. It's only a matter of time before you have a part failure and crash.

Probably more info than you wanted there but I was feeling gabby.

For what it's worth, So far my electric has been waaaay less fiddling around with tuning and tweaking than the previous two helis. If you must have a gasser, I think a gasser is a gasser, but I was always treated well with great customer support from Bergen when I owned one.

If you want the lest hassle go electric, if you want lest hassle and cheap but strong airframe, and cheap replacement costs when you crash(you will crash) go Trex 600 or Trex 600 converted to 700.

Listen to Trackhead on this, he is the expert having flown the whole gamut for AP, gas and electric

Big electric = way higher sticker price then gasser for same size machine correct? Can I even get a gasser sized electirc that will lift a load?

Obin,

My Trex700e is hauling around 8 pounds no problem. A Maxi Joker will haul around 12 pounds quite easily too.

Quite honestly if you are wanting to do video work and you are worried about cost as it seems to be the case, i would stay away from gassers.
Just for the simple fact that it will take a lot more work, time and money to get smooth clean usable video from a gasser heli then say an electric.

Dont get me wrong, you can get great video from gassers, but you will be spending a lot of time getting the vibration out of the video, especially if you are planning on shooting HD video

But to answer your question, yes that heli would lift the weight, but work as a video heli... personally i'd pass.

Trackhead is really the expert here, but the trex600 has carried the prosumer HD camera like a sony ZU1, not a lot of auto time, and it had to be a carried in a underslung mount but the 600 did lift it. But a 600 is VERY easily converted to a 700 in litterally just a few minutes. I just converted another one today in about 15 minutes. you just need the torque tube upgrade, the trex700n boom, and TT. You need to mod the 700n boom slightly(compare it to a 600n boom and you see how it needs to be modded)
