Aerial Photography and Video > PMW-EX1 anyone?

Hi

I have a very hard time deciding what cam to buy for my new AV ship project. There is HVX200(or HPX170) and PMW-EX1. The choice would be a lot easier but unfortunately EX1 suffers from "rolling shutter"(cmos sensors) which means skewed or wobbly picture while changing its direction or even panning. I mean there is no doubt that Sony's picture quality and sharpness is much better but i wouldn't like to throw this much money into dirt.

I wonder if any of You mounted or even considered mounting EX1 to heli(<800mm blades)?

I flown the EX1 for about 10 days of shooting. It's similar in size (shorter) than the Panasonics, making it slightly easier to deal with in terms of aerial usage.

I'm now going to stick with Panasonic because of the advent of the ligher HPX, which is just slightly lighter than the EX1. The benefit of the HPX, like you stated, is no CMOS sensors and a very wide angle lens.

Wow, the new HPX seem to be ideal for aerial and only 4 lbs, I can lift that with my 600 LOL!

It's actually 5 pounds by the time you add the P2 cards and battery.

That is good to hear trackhead. Did You have any problems with "rolling shutter", skewed, wobbly picture or anything else(any samples?)?

I rally like the HPX170 but picture quality and sharpness from EX1 is just astonishing.

The image from the EX1 always looked good to me, but I don't make any claims to be a hyper-analytical hollywood tech geek either.
I doubt most people would ever see any difference.

All the footage we shot with the EX1 is in the hands of another company. I've been hounding them to get my hands on it, but it hasn't happened yet.

Footage from the HVX200 looks great so I would imagine the HPX would look even better with the new wide angle and the updated sensor.

What about this panasonic HMC15? 3x 1/3"ccd, uses SDHC (not costly P2 cards). Many probably will be turned off by the AVCHD format, but this one compresses at a high 24 Mbs rate.

Wasn't aware of that camera. The higher bitrate of the AVCHD nowadays is definitely a bonus, and editing it is less of a chore with more support.

That camera is a bit lighter than the EX1 and HPX, and it shoots all the same frame rates, etc.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Still a far cry from the 100 Mbs compression rate of the HVX200/HPX150.

I want to give the HPX a test flight. I could probably carry the weight of two HVX's but auto's are a whole different story so saving a lb. or two would be good. The improved low light/noise reduction sure would be nice. I hope they have improved the autofocus on the HPX. It is too slow to work reliably on the HVX for low contrast/close in shots. It ruined several good shots before we stopped using it entirely.
