Aerial Photography and Video > Has anybody tried these clip on monitors?

Here is the link to a site that sells them http://www.microopticalcorp.com but I think they are a little pricey.
This seems like the perfect solution for me. I don't like taking my eyes off the heli and the thought of it drifting before I am aware is just another distraction to interfere with the creativity of the moment.

If I used this type of monitor, would the sun be a problem? Would I be able to look at the heli and the monitor at the same time? Any thoughts?

Let us know

If you decide to try one of these viewers, please give us a report. The concept looks great to me. It can eliminate the 2nd person (camera operator) and save bucks. I'm assuming you'll be able to just glance at the monitorr when you think your camera ship is in position....and upon confirmation, shoot it.

Looks like a neat idea.

Keep us posted, please.

Jim,

It would be interesting to see how both eyes will cope with the different depths of field and focus. One eye looking at the heli at say 300 ft away and the second at the monitor that's inches away.

On a side note, the picture you posted along with this post is very nice.
I like the subtle color differences. What process did you use to get these results?

Thank you for the replies.

It will be a little while before I can justify buying one of these monitors but I'll tell ya all about it when I do. I got the idea from a show that is on the public broadcasting channel. Alan (what's his name.....the guy from MASH....Hawkeye) was visiting MIT and the students are into this wearable computer thing. Here is a link to their site http://www.media.mit.edu/wearables

The image was done in Photoshop 7. I just selected the pixels for the sky (with the magic-wand) and made the sky a solid color, then I applied some layer effects, changed some color balances and messed with the curves a little. Not really a procedure just playing a little. Photoshop is a wonderful tool but sometimes you don't even need it, especially when you have the best dog in the world. I present to you "Barney".

Daylight readable

Under "military applications" It does say Daylight readable with adjustable contrast and brightness. I guess the other big question is how bad will it screw with your depth perception.

If you put that screen right in front of one eye I would think your depth perception would be gone. If you put the screen to far out it seems like you could wind up with glare on the little screen.... or is it a non-glare thing?

Sure would like to test that gadget out! I love gadgets, that thing could be the best solution to making RC aerial a one-man operation (although a spotter would still be a good thing!)

Here you can find lot of similar devices either binocular or monocle with and without look through capability.

Hi Barney

Hey Jim - I like the "Nuclear Sky" over Dundee look!

Weather is not going well for cam work - I did get a flight in on the R30 yesterday though. It just doesn't have the kick the R50 did (RIP)

Very interesting ,
What about getting only one small display screen and do the mouting/wiring to fit your needs ?

I think the oem display alone could cost lot less then these products.
