e-Align T-REX 250-450-500-600 > T-REX 450 Decent Budget ESC, any recommendations?

Hi,

The ESC I'm currently using on my REX450 is getting old,
and I'm thinking of replacing it with a new one. However,
I'm kind of short of fund at the moment ( or for any
foreseeable future, in fact ), and am looking for a decent
budget ESC. I don't need any fancy functions. I'd just
need a soft start, heat protection and LV slow down.

I've only recently graduated from hovering practice and am
moving very slowly toward mild 3D stuff.

I'd appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks in advance.

Bulldog is right. Save your money. ESC's performance doesn't drop with age. Now, if you are looking for additional feature that your current ESC does not provide, Align ESC is still the cheapest Heli oriented ESC out there.

Guys,

Thanks for your thoughts.

Well, the reason I'm looking for a new ESC is that
my current ESC, Jeti's 44 with a switching BEC, has
been put on and taken off the heli a number of times,
and has seen not a few crashes, and is starting to
show wear and tear on its shrink wrap, wires. etc.
The wires have even been resoldered by myself and
its capacitators (sp?) have a few dents.

Maybe I can use it until it drops dead, but I don't
like the idea of unexpectedly having it die while
off the ground.

I'd rather be on the safe side and run a new ESC,
even if I'm that much poorer, than take that risk.

My heli needs rebuilding and I thougtht it would be
a good opportunity.

I was just gonna say, since I do repair electronic devices, you can send the ESC to me and I will put on new wires/capacitor/shrinkwrap for you. but then I just noticed you live in Japan...

I guess that's not going to work.

Anyway, for what's worth, switch BEC isn't standard equipment even on the pricy castle creation. If you ever plan to go to 4s, you will be glad that you kept this ESC.

Brian and others,

Thank you again for your input. Yes, I will definately
keep the current Jeti ESC. I will consider Align ESCs
and some others.

I stumbled upon a very cheap ESC. It's called Otter BS35S
and I wonder if anyone has heard anything about it or even
used one.

I have a "hobby wing" esc that Helidirect sells. I believe it comes with the outrage series helicopters. It has been good. Seems to hold up. Fairly cheap.

Just take the the plates off of an Align 60A ESC and rewrap it in heat shrink(I covered mine in Kapton tape). It weighs about 45g after your done.

I really like this ESC because it has a very good 6v regulator and a solid soft start.

Probably it's the one called Pentium 40? It's a little
less expensive than the Align ESC. Umm, good alternative,
I think. Thanks for the info.

Eco8gater,

An Align 60A ESC? I've never thought I'd use an
ESC which handles more than 50A, but from what you've
said, it might be a good idea. I have one spare ESC,
which is a Hacker 70Amp ESC for SVE, but I'm afraid
it's a little too big to fit in a small 450 size frame.

Anyways, thanks for the idea.

That is the one. Another plus is that this esc can do a higher voltage set up, if you ever want to try a 4s system. One potential downside is that it regulates to 5.1 instead of the 6volts for the Align esc, but I cannot "feel" that difference at al during flight.

OK. The Hobbywing Pentium 40 will most likely be
my choice.

Thanks again for everyone who have contributed
their thoughts.
