More data on a disc. So when companies burn discs of movies, they don't have to compress them as much and you get a better picture and better sound quality (supposedly).

I haven't bought any yet. They're pretty expensive and you need a blu ray reader (you can't just stick them into a DVD drive).

If you're online, you're not flying.

Blue ray looks way better.Almost too good.
Plus, the prices for the players are coming way down now.

The advantage is resolution. It's native 1080P. I have a 46" LCD and a Sony BluRay player and the picture is so good, it's almost 3D.

I was watching a bigscreen setup at circuit city and it looked better than real life!
Can the Blue ray players play standard dvd's as well?

Absolutely. The compatibility list is long. It will "uplift" standard DVD to 1080. It's not real 1080, but it looks excellent.

At the current prices it would almost be better to buy a PS3 than a standalone blue ray. You get the player and a gaming machine all in one. Walmart had a $100 off coupon at one time for the PS3. Made it $299.

You should buy the PS3 if your going blu ray. None of the standalones really offer anything in terms of future proofing at the same price level.

Blu ray offers you nothing unless you have an hdtv 720p or better.

I saw a Toshiba laptop at BestBuy a few weeks ago with a BluRay player/burner with HDMI output for $799!

PS3!! BluRay!! 52inch SonyXBR5.

The picture is so crisp, sound is crystal clear. But you have to have a nice tv to REALLY enjoy it.

Agree
That's what we did.
On a 106cm Plasma even just with 1080i scaleup, the picture difference is quite obvious.

It's unfortunate that the players are still so expensive. I just bought a new XPS1530 Laptop and the option for a Blue Ray player was still an additional AU$600,-.
Just a bit too much. Although I might retrofit it later, once the prices come down a bit, as with today's resolution on Laptops, Blue Ray would make a big improvement.
Example, my resolution on a 15.4 inch screen is: 1680 x 1050

The disks have become quite cheap around here, but there aren't that many out there yet.

If you really want to see what the difference a Hi-def DVD looks like w/o shelling out the cash for a Blu-ray, find yourself a new HD-DVD player or the Xbox360 add on. New stand alone players can be had for $50 and the Xbox add on is $30. There is a huge library of movies to choose from (over 300) that are readily available for less than $10 each. You can catch fire sales all the time where they're less than $5.00 each.

Or, without spending any money at all, goto a Best Buy and see a side by side comparison between Blu-Ray and DVD.

Whats the difference. it's like comparing VHS to DVD, improved picture quality.
DVD single layer 4.7G Bluray 25G.
Double layer, well double the values.

Before you jump the gun, in order to reap the benefits, your Monitor / TV has to be able to handle the higher resolution, the Monitor has to be Hi-Def compatible with the resolution, otherwise, the picture will be no different than watching a DVD.
Now there are two type of Hi Res monitors 1080i and 1080p

Both show 1080 lines of vertical resolution and are considered HDTV mode. The i in 1080i is for interlace and the p in 1080p is progressive. To put it in simple terms, you get a better picture with 1080p than 1080i.
Be warned the 1080p will cost more, plus not sure if you will be able to perceive the difference, depends on your monitor make, size, distance, and especially your eyes.
best to go to, an see for yourself, watch the same program on different Monitors

Thanks for all the suggestions and explanations. No need for me to go to Blue Ray until:
1) Price comes down.
2) Get a new HDTV
And the definition of I vrs P on a monitor was helpful also.

You won't notice much of difference between 720p and 1080p if you have a smaller TV than a 50 inch. I have a Pioneer Elite (KURO) 50 inch plasma and it's only 720p, but I did my research before getting my TV and concluded that the difference was minimal.

Anyway, your best bet is probably to get a PS3. More bang for your buck. Just my opinion.
