Anyone using an onboard GPS to record information to geotag images?

If so, what setup are you using?

It would appear that Eagletree has a complete system to do this.

Amazon.com is selling a GPS unit connecting directly to some Nikon cameras like for instance the D300 which I use.
Geomet'r GPS Receiver Adapter for Nikon D300 D3 Fujifilm DSLR Cameras (GNC-35)
The problem I have to work around before actually using it onboard my AP ship, is that I already occupy the camera's 10-pin connector with the GentLed trigger device. I need to assemble a junctionbox combining the Geometra GPS and the GentLed cables.
It's on my To Do-list...

I hinted EagleTree that their GPS might do the same trick as the Geometra, using the NMEA protocol, and they responded that it might actually be just so. Lets see what these creative EagleTree people comes up with
For now maybe it might be possible to achieve the geotagging through a separate software session, combining the photo capture time with the EagleTree flight recorder GPS log data?

Geomet'r vs Redhen: Compare the pricing!!!
Geomet'r - 150 bucks, ready to use
Red Hen - 279 bucks + xxx bucks for the actual bluetooth GPS receiver

I made my choice...

You are right, helibelli, it was not about pricing and I normally go for performance rather than the cheapest, which is very evident when I confront my credit card statements... And I did not mean to discard any solutions, sorry if it seemed like that, though the price difference surprised me.

Karbon, the skytrace unit seems very powerful - are you using it for geotagging your photos? If so, is it an automated process or is it manual correlation of events?

By the way, maybe for clarity it should be pointed out that the method you and I use produces instantanious geotagging upon the very moment of capture, while most other solutions record GPS data and later run a correlation program which performs the actual photo geotagging.

Hey Karbon,
We use CARVEC with GPS, all control inputs go through the system and are recorded (including shutter operation) so we are therefore able to correlate these with GPS position (and baro height if necessary). It's all plotted out on Excel.

That sounds interesting.

Is the GPS info available as a separate download file or is it just placed in the exif/onto the pic?

Is there a wide angle lens available for this camera?

Lol no its not top secret!
Truth is I have just got the camera and cant answer all the questions.
Only that the camera has built in GPS that stores geotags.
Im not sure about altitude etc as yet but i soon as i play with it i will share all the info.
If anyone wants a copy of the PDF manual for the camera, just email me although it is 35mb
It is downloadable from Nikons website.
