Hello.
I want to thank you in advance for any help/advice any of you seasoned flyers can offer.
I recently purchased a brand new TREX 600N PRO. I haven’t had the opportunity to fly it yet. A good friend and very experienced flyer told me to change the gyro and servo that came with the bird because it will for sure crash the first time out. He also added that the gyro will not “hold” (?) the bird (excuse me but doesn’t the gyro simply send the signal to the servo and the servo does the work of “holding” the bird?).
That seems a little disturbing to me as I don’t understand why a company would install an inferior component on their product.
The Gyro in question is a Telebee (550 I think), and the servo is a Futaba 3001.
I look forward to some honest answers as I cannot afford a 401 at this time.
Thank you.
Tino.

More info is needed for sure about your flying style, level and capabilities, and the servos that are in question. If you are a beginner and only into flying circuits and basic aerobatics, the gyro you have mentioned will hold up to that. If you are a hard stick banging 3D'er then no that gyro wont be up to the task and you would need to replace it.

Let us know what servos you are using and type of flying you can do then we can hopefully help out there

Thank you Rick.
I am somewhat of an intermediate.
I can fly my 450 electrics ok.
I want to do some basic hovering and forward flight with an occasional roll/loop.
I do not intend to do any 3d at any time (I'm too old for that lol).

The servo is a Futaba 3001.

I wouldn't even consider putting that sevro on the rudder. In my opinion it's a low end sevro. If you can afford it get a good rudder sevro. Futaba 9253,9254. Even a 9001 will work.

My 2 cents

As Cowjock says, that servo is well below the requirement for the rudder. The Gyro will do fine with some tweaking for your style of flying, but the servo is not up to snuff for centering and the constant workout it will recieve being on the tail. Also as he states your best bet would be a 9253,9254, etc along those lines. For that Gyro you could even use Hitec or Jr digital servos but the two Futaba's just mentioned were designed for tails. They do not have nor need a lot of torque but they are quick and the gear train is designed for constant movement.

Telebee has a GR201 and a GR302 currently. I don't know about their older models but for normal flying with loops and rolls you should be ok with it but not with the servo. As other have said there are much better choices with many different prices.

I'm curious as to what sevros are on the collective and cyclic? It really makes me wonder because it came with a 3001 on the rudder.

I can tell you about the first telebee heading hold gyro they made, don't remember the number of it but I sure do remember the fun I had trying to make it work. Wound up throwing it out and putting my futaba machanical gyro back on the heli. The trouble with it was it was very temperature sensitive. I can not speak for the newer Telebee's. When I up graded to the futaba 401 I never looked at another gyro till I got my Trex 600n Nov. 2007 then I got a CY gyro.

Hey Cowjock and all others.
All the servos are the same.
I will be getting a 401 with servo but I am a little confused.
A lot of places are offering as many as three different Futaba servos.
a 9254, 9257, 9650 and 3500.
I'm sure there is a difference, what do you reccomend?
Tino.

Tino,if you are gonna spend that much,I would seriously recommend the JR3D770 and 8900G combo. You can set it a at a low forgiving setting and just tool around the skys and as your skills get better you can set it to your liking.I run this same setup on my 50's and 90's and love it.Good luck bud, have fun.

The 9254 works well with the 401. I believe the 9257 was designed for electric helis. I'm really not familiar with JR sevros. I do have some experience with the JR3D770 gyro. This past spring I setup a Trex 600n with one. It was a real BEAR to set up, finally got it set up and it worked well.

Thats what I thought you were going to say. They will work but I wouldn't risk the Trex to a low end sevro. Throttle is ok but for collective and cyclic wouldn't do it for me. Since you say your an intermediate, a futaba 9001 would work fine. I'm running 9252's in mine but I tend to beat the snot out of mine.

Good luck!
