I had a minor incident that bent the feathing shaft on my 400. Disassembly revealed a bunch of small washers that were not on the exploded diagram of the heli.

Are these the "shims" I have read about? Where do they go? Why are they used?

Thanks!!

thin washers are your shims. put an even amount on each side of the head block outside the head damper o-rings. make sure you put the bearing washer against the bearings before the shims.
edit- they are used to make the head tighter. without shims, the feathering shaft is too long, and your head will wobble.

Yep! Those are your shims. They go on after you damper/o-ring, and are used for fine tuning the fit and movement of your blade grips.

Once you rebuild your feathering spindle assembly, your blade grips should be snug, but spin freely. Not so tight that they feel notchy when you move the grips. Also, make sure you use the same # of shims on each side, as failure to do this will cause your head to be out of balance.

The shims are not represented on the exploded view in your manual, but they are supposed to be there.
Hope that helps.

here is a trick that will help you in the future so you don't have to take all that apart and will make the repair a breeze!
In the future take the screw off one side and with an old fly screw it into it like the screw you just took out. And push the whole thing out the other side. The flybar will keep all your bearings and washers in place. Once the bent feathering shaft is out the other side take it out of the fly bar and screw the new one into it.
Make sure to put the screw and washer on the opposite side, that will stop the feathering shaft when you pull the new one in! then just unscrew your feathering shaft from the flybar and put the new screw and washer on it! and you are done in about 90 seconds!!!
You can PM if you still have questions!

one more thing, make sure to replace those dampers regular, as soon as they start to get soft. makes flying more fun when the equipment is in good shape.

is it true that the 2 races are of different sizes (I.D.)
and the bigger I.D. goes to the bearing side of the blade grip?

reinstated with helifreak -- for now

Yes it it is true

The larger I.D goes into the blade grip first

This might help.

I made this when I first got the 400, as my eyes are 50+ years old.

Hope it helps some of you "older" flyers,
