I found the 50mm F1.2 easy enough but the 200mm F1.8 I can't. I find the F2 and above. Any suggestions? I like them fast as night time aerials rock.

The beatings will continue until morale improves...

Canon stopped making the 200 f1.8 a few years back. I think it was recently in the spring of this year they started up with a new 200 f2 again.

If you can find a used 200 f1.8, I think they are going for around $4000, but I am not even sure replacement parts are available for them any more.

They are the best. I actually just got to visit their store last week. they've got a system of automated rollers and little elevators. if you want a lense, you go upstairs, pick it out, they stick it in a box, and the lense goes down a mini-elevator, and travels to the front. It's pretty cool.

Rhett... I can't fly, luckily the HC Profi Can!

Sounds cool but they have to have what you want IN STOCK first. I like B&H but there have been a few instances where they didn't have what I wanted in stock so I had to go elsewhere and in some cases the cost was less.

Does anyone know what shutter speed Vincent was using during the filming of his movie?

The world is getting very interesting....

Jim Jannard at RED is saying that they will have a redesigned version of their Scarlet camera in production by the next NAB Convention (April 2009)... and that they are going to be doing a still digital SLR as well.

And Panasonic claims to have the smallest, full frame HiDef video camera on the market in 2009

Check this out on Stu Maschwitz' blog for a photo and more info...
http://prolost.blogspot.com/2008/09...about-this.html

The lines between still and video cameras are getting VERY blurred (but hopefully not the images that they produce!)

I'm glad I paid the extra bucks to live in the 21st Century! :-)

Does anyone know what the output format is for the video, NTSC or PAL? Kinda curious if they made it dual output or switchable to either one.

Video out terminal are interchangeable between both PAL and NTSC, otherwise i guess they will follow the traditional standard for each region...

Has anyone seen if the burst buffer is larger for the sRAW1&2 file formats?

I just watched the short video shot with this camera and I am hooked. However I'm a complete noob who has been looking to get into serious DSLR hobby photography for years. The money is not an issue, but would this be "too much" of a camera to start with?

Jump in with it or can someone recommend something more reasonable for a beginner (that video was only 1/4 resolution also, which is more than enough for me).

thanks!

I second Tabb, 50D is a great value for money camera...
If money are no issue, there are no such thing as "to much" i mean, what could go wrong then

I remember getting into photography and bought myself a P&S. After three weeks I ended up returning it for a DSLR as I quickly outgrew the P&S. I don't know your habits with toys but I'm the type to "play". So looking back I would buy even a higher end DSLR than what I initially purchased.

Same with lenses.

jcrack_corn,

If spending the $2700 for the EOS 5D-II body won't cause you to miss meals.... go for it. You will never regret it. That said, you will also have absolutely NO excuses that your equipment is holding you back. (not that anybody should ever use that as an excuse...)

Most of success in photography comes from timing.... knowing exactly WHEN to press the button. That "When" is determined by "When" the lighting is exactly right... "When" the image is composed properly.. "When" it is in focus....

Try to remember that Canon will sell thousands of the EOS 5D-II's ....it is your vision, talent, and perserverance that will set you apart from those other thousands of owners.

Hope this helps!

I'm not a total noob, but seem like it compared to you guys, I've experimented with long exposure low light shots (digital), feel comfortable manipulating f-stops/exposure time/white balance and most of the basic "physics" stuff. I've only recently discovered that I REALLY like fast moving sports shots and macro shots of anything.

Hi-res macro gets me off, and the thought of hi-res time lapse low light really gets me off....

Plus my best friend and his family have been in the biz for years and he can help with settings/lenses/flashes/diffusers etc.....

I will look at the 50D right now....thanks!

I know someone asked about the car mounts Vincent used...

Here you virtually find all the stuff you need for that purpose:

Thread hijack!!

Having mounted hundreds of cameras on everything from Austin Martins to Animatronic giraffes, I can tell you that a Doggicam kit is about as good as it gets.

http://www.doggicam.com/

Modern Studio equipment in LA makes the best knock offs, and Filmair International has some of the cleanest rigs for larger cameras.

A quick solution is also a CineSaddle or sandbag, and a couple of rachet straps; you can do wonders with the stuff.

In regards to the original thread, I've just ordered two of the new Canon's through Vistek in Toronto.... being able to use my existing glass, and a modified FD 7.5mm, seems like a great interim solution till scarlet hits the shelves.

WoooHooo!!
