My esc is in town says USPS and once I get that I am ready for a maiden flight. Well after a bit of soldering of course. If all goes well I should have a video by the end of the day.

BIG SCARY HELICOPTER!!! BIG FREAKING SCARY HELICOPTER!!! NEED TO TONE DOWN BEFORE HAVE HEART ATTACK!!! BIG SCARY HELICOPTER!!!

Really! That thing is a beast and I don't mean cute fuzzy hamster kind of beast but big eat your dog kind of beast. Damn I was unprepared for just how freaking fast the cyclic and tail are on this thing. I had to add expo to the tail and tone down the cyclic a lot just to keep it in a 20x20ft box. It feels like I just took the King out for its' very first hover. My fingers were shaking the heli was hovering but I could not keep it still. I did finish 5min on it though and it is still in one piece, so that is a bonus. The simple answer is that if just has too much power right now. I was hovering just over midstick at about 70% throttle and let me tell you, there is a whole lat more where that came from!

Anyhow for those who care, I will keep you updated

Ok second packs done and things were better. I have the swash setting for both aileron and elevator set at 35% and the pitch is set to 25%. Now it flies more like my Rex450 but a little bit more stable. It was pretty windy out so that is party to blame. The Align gyro is working very well except it has a tendency to wander when you are sitting on the ground. Once in the air it holds about the same as my GY240. It still needs some fine tuning but it is working well so far.

Oh and I test flew it for 5min, which is more like flying it for 3-4 minutes cause it was sitting on the ground for part of that time as I adjusted the radio, and I put back in 920mAh in both my 3s 2200 packs. This time I hovered for nearly all of the 5:30 flight and I will see how much that took here shortly.

Greg, I can only image what it will be like you you having never flown anything but tiny micros

Thanks for the update and the warning Chris. When I went from the Blade CP to the HBK2 there was bit of shock the first time it spooled up. I remember feeling like I need to take a few steps backward and give it more room.

As I've been building the T500, the size is simply astounding. I'm looking for the breath talking shock, during the first spool up.

BCP to king then to 450 are equivalent steps but greg I am meaning to scare you my friend you just jumped up 2 steps. I know you well enough you'll take it easy and it will be no big thing. I wanted the shock thats why I kept going up. And to think all the guys on the raptor forum told me I should bite the bullet and get the 50 cause it has more pop. With my lazy afternoon flying I think the 30 was the right thing to do. I am a simpleton a good day of figure 8's is all I need for a fix.

Good luck have fun TJ and GREG. But hey TJ how bout that vid I want to see this protos in action with commentary your vids are informative as well as fun. I am sure I may have to have a 500 when the classifieds throws one at me.

My 500 is running 6S. Small pinion.

Throttle = 75% mid 85% 3/4 stick Normal mode.

I'm no hotshot pilot. However:

Hovered on a 48" wide boardwalk no problem from first attempt.

Sounds like a turbine. I've had it 6 months.

Delighted to have it. Feels more like my 600N than my 450.

Ok I just ran the 3rd battery through the Protos and I got a short video. Now it seems I have a vibration somewhere. It still hovers but I believe the tail jerked a couple time because of it. Big heli for sure

I hear ya T-man. I've been about 20 feet away from a T500 in flight and just watching it takes your breath away. If I wasn't overwhelmed the first time I spool it up, I'd be dissapointed.

Oh yeah I didn't mention it but the stock vertical fin is so weak, from being so light weight, that it bends when no battery is in the heli and the heli is tail heavy. So I etched off some double sided circuit board the other day at work and cut out a new one. Then I painted it my favorite heli color and stuck it on there. It is WAY more rigid now and I have an easy to see tail fin. Win win.

BTW speaking of batts. I've decided Im using only 1 3s 2100mah FMA pack in my big fella. gave up on the idea of a couple Nicads. But the poor little king is upset his CC10/BEC has left him. My scales are dead but I started comparing weight and a huge lipo is better than nicads.

Like you, I took it conserative with all my helis as I tweaked the set up.

As you know, you're getting lots of groung effect as you wisely hover low.

You'll be pleased with your stability as you get 4 feet in the air.

I ran another pack through it today to show it off for mfcrash. Last night I loosened the belt quite a bit and that has really helped smooth things out but I gotta say I am having hell with the gyro. The manual says to center the tail slider, center the servo arm and set the gain to 70%. On the bench the gyro works perfectly. It holds the tail fins solid and when I move the tail around, it moved the blades and holds them solid and still. BUT when I fly the heli the gyro makes the servo go all the way nose-right, moving the slider left. When I correct for it, it again slowly moved the slider to the left again. In the air it hold decently but the tail slowly moves nose-right. If I trim the tail, there is a point where the tail will move left on one click of trim and right on a click the other way. I only have one thing to try left and that is adjust the delay down to zero. I thought the delay would not effect things when a digital servo was used but mfcrash said the 401 manual instructs a delay of 0 when using a digital servo.

Anyhow I have set the delay to 0 and try it again tomorrow. If that doesn't work, I will throw the 240 on it and be done with it.

GY240 wont work on digital servo!

I dont know why other than I believe it has a slower rate than the 401 and maybe it cant handle the current as the manual also says no bigger than 30 size aircraft. Im thinking because of standard servos? I dont know.
