I purchased one of the blue anodized start shafts last season and lately it's been giving me some trouble. I think that the one way bearing in it may be spinning inside the adapter. I.E.- when I engage the starter and shaft to the engine the whole blue assembly spins however the shaft does not. also the base tends to heat up. If I just hold the starter in my hand and turn it over the whole assembly spins just fine. Has anyone experienced similar probems with this wand. I believe I purchased it from heli-hut. Any possible solutions would be greatly appreciated. I may try to pull the bearings and red locktite them into the assembly.

How about this!

Is your starter turning the right way. It should turn counter-clockwise.

The cheap ones are garbage for sure. I had a blue anodized GH hobbies wand and it stripped out after only 50 or so starts. It still starts my Fury ok since the hex adapter is very tight but it won't start my Raptor's at all, it just spins in the coupler.

Purchased the Robbe one a while back and haven't had a problem ever since. I wouldn't mount it direct to your starter, just use the rubber coupling and fit it in there. It makes it easier to dissasemble and acts like a uni joint and clutch to stop over loading and feedback.

Tom,

On the Robbe, there are 2 flathead
socket screws which hold the upper
half of the base to the lower half. They
aren't Loctited. Take them out and
Loctite them.

Also, did you know the wand itself
has a ball driver on the side that is
hidden?

Yes, glad you bought that up Z. Good point if you get the Robbe starter to grab the loctite and fix everything up. No, never looked at the other side I must confess.

today I saw someone at the field with a gold plated starter wand, it was very big compare to my stock tt starter wand, and it had a one way bearing in it. He got his in a package deal but he told me he saw it online for around $75 dollars. First thing came to my mind is waste of money. I don't know about the other heli but my cheap r30 v1 came with a one way bearing in the start shaft, so I don't see the purpose of having one in the starter wand. I think I am missing something

Unfortunately not all of us have one way bearings in the start system. In fact often it is not wanted. I personally prefer the Futura SE start system with the bearing out of the heli not only saving weight but reducing maintenance issuses.

Tom's correct. The start shaft in question was for a Freya which does not have a one-way bearing installed in the heli. Many of the "higher-end" helis are equiped this way.

Just in case others encounter similar problems, the wand was fixed by epoxying the bearing inside the start shaft's outer race.

I did around 20gal on my r30 and never thought about the one way bearing in the start shaft. I don't know about the 60 size but the one way in the r30 is small and I don't think it would affect the weight enough to affect the performance. Is there any other disadvantage of having the one way bearing on the heli like the r30, I cant figure why the expensive .60 size don't come with one way bearing
