Gasser Model RC Helicopters > V3 appears to be plugged up

I have been running the V3 on an Xcell 1005 with the TRM 260 and it wasn't running right so I swapped out for the OEM can. I noticed a lot of difference. RPM went to over 2000 (I set it down and had to drop the throttle curve quite a bit to get it back to the 1650 I usually run. The noise was worse than I can remember (I used to run the cans only) then I went to the Bison muffler (until it cracked) and then went to the V3.

The question is does anyone have a suggestion on how to check the V3 to make sure it is not plugged? I have been told I could / should drill out the center of the baffles but I am concerned there would be pieces that might get back into the engine at a later time.

I also understand that the rear exhaust Zimm 2620 is the way to go but they seem to be back ordered everywhere.

V3

Has anyone had piston, piston ring, cylinder failures. I have three of these, two on MA 1005's and one on a Spectre. Running the same fuel on all three, 32:1 (4 oz/gal) Klotz synthetic. I've had two piston, ring, cylinder failures on the Spectra. Running 1750 head (12500 engine rpm). Failures are scratched piston, ring, and cyl only on the exhaust side. No indication of heat just scratches resulting in low cylinder compression and failure to start. I'm wondering if Im getting crap from my Torpedo V3 muffler. It appears to have scale or welding slag inside. The muffler is the only differance in the three helis. However granted the engine rpm on the 1005's is a little lower.

posted this earlier, some interesting photos in the thread.
filled mine with BB's and vibrated the hell out of it, then washed with solvent.

Muffler plugged?

Take a garden hose and use a hose clamp to secure it to the output of the muffler. Then run the water through for a good 10 minutes at full pressure (hopefully you have high pressure where you live, I got 80 lbs) and the water will clean out any plugs and carbon over time.

Then try it again and it should be much better.

Are tthe V3's investment cast ???

Wondering if their manufactured using a investment cast method, or lost wax process, and their still a bit of silicon casting sand on the internals. Or maybe their polished in a vibratory bowl using a abrasive media and some is left hidden.

Seen a few and they don't appear to have been welded or have appearant seams.

I'd Crock pot " or maybe a bread pan" it in glycol and get it hot and see what evidence come's out- when it cools - filter the stuff through a coffy filter. Saw the previous photo's and it sure looked like casting evidence. May wish to save back a sample for testing.

Be ready to dull it up!

What comes out is all the nice finish on the outside and it looks like hell afterwards. The only way to "shine it up" after the crockpot event is to scotch brite it and then you get that scratchy shine if you know what I mean. If you shine in one direction all the scratches will line up around the circumference of it and it actually looks fairly good.

So boiling it in antifreeze invites the scotch-brite shoeshine!

Absolutely, I have had two engines with this exact problem. Scratched up on the cylinder exhaust side. No sign of heat. Very Very interesting, I was starting to doubt myself. 5oz to 1 gallon of fuel, with needles very rich.

If you lug the engine to much, which is easy to do, it doesn't matter how much oil you use, its going to scratch...Not warming the engine up enough before flight will do this also in combination with lugging..Its a sure thing...
If your running a stock air cleaner, with the needles both at 11/2, then just take the cover off the air cleaner, and watch how different your engine runs...high flow air cleaners are much better, this helps the novice from lugging as much is what I have found...
