Gasser Model RC Helicopters > What's your technique for bringing up head speed ??

Many remember a while back, when I was dialing in my SE 1005 w/ a Hanson, achieving the great resolution " with many's help " for feel on the collective it now has. --- Great !

This weekend I was flying the whole fleet in the wind, {Stinkey 30, the Evo T 52, the SE and the stock 1005,)

I noticed my stocker 1005 kinda feels like a mutt and a bit dodgy when hovering in the wind compared to the SE and I know it's got to be a touch low on the main head speed.

The SE is really smoking and I love it but I'd like to bring the stocker up to a higher speed.

Other than shifting the T- curve posistion / as it see's and effects the C curve, is their a technique or applied proccedure ??

Last time we checked it was around 1600 - but this weekend it really felt slow. It was cold 60's, windy and very high humidity.

Any methods ???

Head Speed

I dont know if you use a governor but it makes a big difference, especially with the linkage mods.I use the GV1 on my gassers and it nice to be able to make minor adjustments to the head speed at will.Other than that i suppose it is fine tuning your pitch to maintain your desired speed.

In theory you can raise P2,P3, and P4 the same amount on the throttle curve. You are high enough up the curve that it should be close to linear. You can't do anything with P1 or P5 or at least you shouldn't. If the headspeed does sag at the top end you could lower the pitch at the P5 position a little or just live with it.

This is what you had for curves last we kibitzed.

Do you have any way to check engine temp? Is it possible it went a bit lean with the cooler air and is loosing speed? Just a thought, crack open the low end a hair, check plug color, check engine temp. Or maybe it's a bit rich?

But could just need a bump in the throttle curve to.

Will do !

Never thought of that, has merit - it seemed to change when it got cold. Has alway's run like silk but I bet thats it. I'll pull the plug before I run it up, and get a temp, shift the curve a bit, and see if I can get a tach on it.

Maybe it's time to clean the foamy cleaner, cold = thicker spooge.
Could have a bit of a breathing problem.

Thanx !

I like the idea of a stack but .....

We got some pretty nastey size grasshoppers, turf fluff, a bit of corn and bean foddage, and some times at the field these like little varmits stick their heads up out of these tiney mound of dirt.

Really don't like the idea of using the motor as a quiseinart blender ingester - prior to blowing them up thru that big fan on top or the little fan in back. Just doest seem right to suck in all that stuff.

Have to admit though : I got one set of blades I'm letting get pretty nasty with bug goo " hoping to win the nastiest blade contest"

meh, I don't think the grasshopper would scratch the piston - dust on the other hand would turn into a lapping compound BUT I figure that I don't fly in dusty conditions. The air my Predator is pulling through the engine is MUCH cleaner than the air my Nitro heli's get - what with clutch dust and other debris. Would be nice to have a real aircleaner on the end of that stack - don't know what would do. The ear piece foam idea would help keep the bigger bugs out but not much dust unless you get a real dense foam and oil it.

Air cleaner

Most of the after market pancake chrome air filters have an aluminium mounting boss that is made out of billet and shaped to smooth the flow like a stack.I use K&N filter oil on mine to catch the nasties.I think Daves Discount Motors keeps them.
