Gasser Model RC Helicopters > PG Gasser Servos

I just bought a second Pg gasser and was thinking of using servos with metal gears instead of nylon gears like my 8311 on my other gasser. What do you guys think of metal gears will the vibs wear out the gears fast and get sloppy? OR should I just stick with nylon gears?
I do Not do any hard 3D flying.

Thanks

I am flying Futaba 9351's in my Pred. - about 5 gallons worth now. I'm REALLY happy with them. I was very concerned about stripping a plastic gear in flight with the thought of running 9252's as has been reported by some nitro-90 pilot's (though pretty rare). But I've never heard of this happening with an 8311. If I had the 8311's I wouldn't change them. I've flown them on someone else's GSR and they worked great.

Thanks for your info, I was thinking of Jr8717 or 9351.

If I were buying new it'd be the BLS351's or BLS253's, I like the idea of the brushless motors.

Honestly, nylon or metal gears isn't going to make a difference. I really like the Futaba 9452 servo, fast, strong, metal gears that don't get sloppy, and the price is right. I've got the 8717s on my Spectra, and I wouldn't buy them again, I wanted 9452s and the LHS was out. I didn't feel like waiting so I went home with the 8717s.

Torque: 127.8 oz-in @ 6V
(9.2 kg-cm @ 6V)
Weight: 1.76oz (50g)
Length: 1.57" (40mm)
Width: .8" (20mm)
Height: 1.32" (33.6mm)

Mr Eury,

Why dont you like the 8717? I was thinking that they may be to fast for me and make the heli really sensitive also I heard that 8717 draw alot of power.

Mr jschenck,
I will be buying new so maybe i'll look into the brushless servos.

The problem is there are to many servos to choose from.

Eury

What's wrong with the 8717's? Just curious. I tend to like JR stuff as it comes with 3x the warranty of Futaba.

There's nothing wrong with them, they are strong and fast, and center very well. I just think that they are not worth the money for the small increase in performance, and their extremely power hungry nature means that my generator equipped Spectra is the only thing I'd ever put them on.

If you are Mr Super Hot 3d Crack Rolling guy, then they would be worth it to you. I'm honest with myself, I'm not that guy. I fly limited 3d (more every day!), and I fly smoothly, so I don't take advantage of the extreme speed of the 8717s, and I'd wager money that 99.5% of the rest of the heli guys out there don't either. The difference between them and a set of 9452s is non existent in the air for the vast majority of us, except you'll save $40-$50 a servo on the 9452s, and they don't kill your batteries. Not to mention the extremely limited servo arm choice with JR, if it weren't such a pain to redo my setup, I'd pull my 8717s and sell them for Futabas.

Wanna trade them for 9252's?

I think you've gotta go higher end than that! A set of brushless, or a new set of 9351s, I'd probably do it. although it's so hard to justify digging into a heli that's flying well just to change equipment out.

I'll add that the 9351's were extremely fast when I ran them off 6.0V using the Fromeco Arizona - I could get it to crack hover, but really don't like beating on my radio like that. Even at the 5.4V using the Jewel they are very fast. I'll bet that the realized speed difference between 9351's 9452's and 8717's is pretty minuscule at the same voltage. The real advantage to 8717's is there have been many flying them on unregulated 2S RX power successfully, I would not do that with any other servo. I'd be curious to see if anyone has tried unregulated A123's on the Futaba brushless and 9351, 9452's.

Wouldn't do any of that to remove my on board alternator though.

I'm running 9452's unregulated on A123's. Along with all my other Digital Futaba's rated at 6v. You have to keep in mind that the top off voltage for A123 is less than a 5 cell nimh or nicad.

I've tried convincing rbort to offer a regulator that would work with A123's! Maybe that will happen some day....

Would a 6.9v regulator work with that? -- charge the battery and run everything on that voltage?

That would probably work. But I don't want you to offer one, then I'd have to send mine back to you to be modified so I could run A123s in the Spectra! As it is, the Spectra is the only thing I own that isn't on A123s.

A 6.9v regulator would work fine. At 6.9v the pack is at least 90-95% charged.
